Eyes in the Sky — Pluto Stationary Retrograde: May 6, 2026
If I didn’t have so much experience with Pluto, I could easily dismiss this small planet, but its power is no small thing. On May 6th, Pluto will retrograde in the sidereal sign of Capricorn at approximately 11 degrees of Capricorn. If you have a planet near that degree in Capricorn, Cancer, Aries, or Libra in your birth chart, you will feel its influence most strongly. The effects of the observatory will be over 5 days before and after, so the period of greatest concentration will be approximately from May 1st to May 11th.
As a Pluto station, I often experience intense energy and concentrated power surges in my solar plexus. This is probably because Scorpio, the sign I most closely associate with Pluto, is rising.
Why Pluto is important in Vedic astrology
Although not a traditional Vedic planet, the great Vedic astrologer Nirendra Desai pointed to the ancient Vashistha Nadi palm frond and predicted that three important grahas would be discovered by the Jyotishis in Kali Yuga. Dennis Harness points out that, according to Desai, palm leaves are named these Grahas, Prajapati, Varuna, and Yama, and Pluto is most closely associated with the god Yama.
“In Hindu mythology, Yama is the god of death and the representative of Shiva. Yama means ‘the link, the restrainer’ who keeps humanity in check. Yama is the god who demands sacrifice and discipline. He determines which human actions will bear fruit or not. Yama then judges the dead whom his messengers bring before his throne. His aide Chitragupta catalogs the karmas of all humanity and reenacts the major life events that help the souls realize their life’s work.” (Reference: http://dennisarness.com/plutoneovedic.html)
Western astrologers associate Pluto with the Shiva principle, transformation through the destruction of the old. Pluto’s influence is rarely subtle. It brings about metaphorical death. That is, the end of patterns, structures, relationships, and identities that have outlived their purpose. The houses we pass remind us that what is broken can no longer be repaired, it must be remodeled. As the old is destroyed, rebirth takes place.
I like to think of Pluto’s more difficult passages as invitations to surrender to divine will, a deep trust that even as the familiar decays, something better is being built. Pluto’s transit requires complete faith that God has a plan, even if the lesson seems painful.
What does Pluto retrograde mean?
Pluto’s power of transformation and rebirth deepens during its retrograde, which lasts until approximately October 2026. For some, this period gives them new strength to overcome challenges that seemed insurmountable. Like all retrogrades, it turns energy inward. That is, releasing rigid patterns for the workings of the inner mind and confronting relationships with security and control.
Now is the time to take an honest look at how we are giving our power to others. Or, conversely, if we control others or situations in ways that no longer serve us. Fateful events and recurring themes surface to show which habits, obsessions, addictions, and blind spots should be eliminated rather than managed.
It can be a productive time like this:
- Start therapy or deepen existing inner work
- Physical detox and internal cleansing
- Go deeper with a meditation retreat
- Confronting what has been avoided regarding power and control in relationships
Pluto retrograde forces an internal investigation. That is, root out the problem, eliminate it, and allow something new to grow in its place.
your chart and capricorn
No matter which house in your birth chart is associated with Capricorn, you are experiencing a long arc of change that begins around 2020 and continues until 2040. This retrograde is a chance for inner changes to take root before the next outward thrust resumes.
For example, with Sagittarius rising, Capricorn rules the second house, deepening changes in family, finances, and speech. It’s not possible to list all the combinations in this short article, but keep an eye on Capricorn in your chart, where this retrograde work takes place.
Special thanks to my teachers Comilla Sutton, Dennis Harness, and all my Jyotish and spiritual teachers for their wisdom and continued inspiration. Special thanks to Robert Hand for his insights on outer planets.
