Her incredible record-breaking performance as Roxie Hart in the Broadway musical chicagoWhitney Leavitt showed up at the 79th Tony Awards last night, proving once again that she’s a star and that audiences love her. Before taking the stage for Roxie Hart’s final performance in a stunning opening number celebrating the musical’s 30th anniversary, Levitt graced the Tonys’ navy blue carpet in a breathtaking Marchesa dress that left our jaws on the floor. The actress’s first major red carpet appearance lasted just 10 seconds.
Reflecting the glamor of Old Hollywood, the Marchesa number featured a ’50s-inspired silhouette with a reddish tulle skirt and sculptural black bodice. The strapless neckline beautifully complemented Leavitt’s 19th-century Fred Leighton jewelry, including a mine-cut diamond necklace and earrings, and the polished, slick-back bun was inspired by Audrey Hepburn. The final look was very elegant.
After the big night, Leavitt exclusively shared fashion and beauty details with Who What Wear.
First off, what was the vision and vibe you had in mind for your Tony Awards red carpet look?
It was a real honor to be able to attend and participate in the Tony Awards, which was my first major awards ceremony. From the beginning, I envisioned doing something vintage-inspired that paid homage to Old Hollywood. Specifically, I wanted a gorgeous neckline that could be accented with jewelry to give the look a classy edge. My amazing stylist Eliza Yeley was very supportive and we worked together on this vision. It was a dream to see it come true. One of the most unexpected moments of the night was meeting Georgina Chapman. She came up to me to thank me for wearing her beautiful designs and had kind words to say to me. I was really surprised and very moved. It felt like one of those special, serendipitous moments you’ll never forget.
Please tell us about the style you ultimately chose and why you liked it so much.
Marchesa, as expected. It was even better than what I had imagined in my head! I love the structure and combination of textiles. The silhouette of the dress is similar to those worn in the 1950s and 60s, which was exactly what I wanted. Pairing it with 19th century Fred Leighton jewelry further enhances the luxury and gives the look an edge.
Is there a nod to Roxie Hart?
Wearing diamonds is always a tribute to Roxie Hart. After spending so much time in her world, I associate her with a bit of a special sparkle. Roxy is charming and confident, so we felt diamonds were the perfect way to channel a little of that energy.
What is your personal philosophy regarding red carpet attire?
I think fashion should be fun, but I always want to feel like myself and wear looks that reflect who I am. Especially as a mom, I like to take advantage of red carpet opportunities to give my all. And while I love making a statement, I still have to always be myself. [I’m] I’m always looking for something elegant and sophisticated with a modern touch.
What’s a great styling tip you’ve learned recently?
I decided that the secret is not what you wear, but how you wear it.
What does your typical red carpet skincare prep look like?
I always do a collagen face mask the night before a big event. [Experiment’s] molecular mesh Moisturizer is also a game changer. Humidity, humidity, humidity!
What was the direction of your glam look? Did you and your team look at any specific references?
I wanted an updo to emphasize the neckline of the dress. I always prefer soft makeup. We were going for an Old Hollywood, Audrey Hepburn inspired look.
You have completed a record-breaking run as Roxie Hart. chicago. Looking back, what is your most memorable running moment?
It was a dream come true for me to appear on Broadway. I am forever grateful to this amazing community for embracing me. One of the most meaningful moments during my run was being able to take my kids to the theater and stage during rehearsals. Of course, playing the role of Roxie Hart was a dream come true, but sharing that journey with my family made it even more special. I always want to show them that it’s okay to dream big and pursue things that are scary or out of reach.
Some of your wildest dreams come true! So what’s next?
Big things are happening at Leavitt Media House. We are currently developing several new projects and can’t wait to share more with you soon.
