Oprah Winfrey speaks out about Gayle King lesbian relationship rumors
In 1976, Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King were journalists in their 20s working at WJZ in Baltimore, with Oprah as a news anchor and Gayle as a production assistant.
“Gale is like a mother, a sister and a friend to me,” Oprah explained, revealing that Gale was the only one who believed in her when she decided to move from Baltimore to Chicago to pursue a career as a broadcaster.
“You know, for years people have said we were gay,” she continued, “and we’ve always resisted that, and people may still think that.”
Oprah added that over the years, friends have sometimes expressed jealousy or resentment towards her, concluding, “You can’t be friends with someone who is even a little bit jealous of what you do, much less someone who is jealous of your successes, your accolades or everything you have. If you detect those feelings in someone, there’s no way you can be friends with them.”
She also acknowledged that Oprah’s astronomical fame means she is surrounded by yes-men, explaining, “Everybody in Oprah’s life is always so flattering and always so agrees with everything she says, and sometimes I’m like, ‘That’s not true. Your hair doesn’t look good on you.'”
