Miles Gutierrez-Riley (off campus) could spend a lot of that friend Despite all the drug-fueled chaos and unpredictable adventures he endures, his favorite moment in the film is surprisingly simple.
Speaking with Gatey at the Tribeca Film Festival premiere, he revealed that his most memorable scene was an early interaction between his character Spencer and Billie Lourd’s Penny.
“That was actually my favorite scene to shoot,” Gutierrez-Reilly said.
The actor admitted that he was already a fan of Lard before joining the project and was excited to share scenes with her. But once filming began, it was the ease of their connection that made the moment unforgettable.
“I’ve always been a huge fan of Billie, so I was already excited about the opportunity to work with her,” he said. “She’s very chill, very funny, very talented.”
Gutierrez-Reilly said there was nothing particularly flashy about the scene itself. In fact, its simplicity is why it works so well.
“I remember thinking, ‘Wow, we’re just looking at each other as we say our lines,'” he recalled. “And I left like this, “Wow, that felt so good.”
That natural chemistry was clearly not lost on Lourd. After attending a screening of the film, she shared her thoughts with Gutierrez-Riley, making him laugh.
“She emailed me after seeing the screening a few months ago and was like, ‘Why do we have such romantic chemistry in the first scene?'” he said. “And I thought, ‘Yeah, I don’t know.'” As someone who had seen the movie, I had an epiphany.
meanwhile that friend Centering around the increasingly chaotic antics of Henry (Josh Brenner), his girlfriend Penny (Lard), and Henry’s best friend Paul (Harvey Gillen), Spencer serves as one of the film’s unexpected wildcards. Gutierrez-Reilly was immediately attracted to the role, telling Gatey that he was looking for a chance to work on a broad comedy after telling his agent that he “wanted to do something really, really funny with a capital F.”

Still, he believes that beneath the outlandish comedy, the film’s greatest strength lies in its heart. Gutierrez-Reilly cited themes of friendship, chosen family, and self-discovery as reasons why audiences will relate to the story.
“There is a ragtag group of misfits who are assembling themselves,” he explained. “The script is so heartfelt and sensitively written that I think you’ll leave with a pretty heartwarming feeling that as long as the people around you treat you kindly and respectfully, everything will be okay.”
As for Spencer, Gutierrez-Reilly sees him as someone who is still thinking things through.
“I felt like Spencer was finding himself,” he said. “I think he’s at a crossroads in many aspects of his life.”
