Eyes in the Sky — Mercury Combustion: May 1 to May 26, 2026
Mercury combusts on May 1st, moves within 14 degrees of the Sun, and continues to combust until May 26th. For almost a month, the Messenger planet is engulfed by the sun’s flames, disappearing from the night sky and being drawn on a journey inland.
Mercury and the Sun: Friends in Fire
The good news about Mercury combusts compared to Mars and Saturn combusts is that Mercury and the Sun are friends in Vedic astrology. Mercury can cope with its close proximity to the Sun better than most planets. Still, combustion is combustion. Mercury’s nature can be tense, exaggerated, or erratic depending on what else is in the sky.
Mercury rules communication, intellect, speech, writing, commerce, skin, nervous system, media, and analytical mind. During combustion, these areas become either overstimulated or depleted, sometimes both in rapid succession.
what happens during the combustion of mercury
The most noticeable effect is what I call “mental overdrive that causes fatigue.” Mercury controls the nervous system, and too much solar fire can burn electrical wires. The following may occur:
- A heightened sense of thought that is difficult to slow down.
- Communication mistakes: Emails sent too quickly, misspoken words, contracts that require careful review.
- Difficulty concentrating or finishing what you start
- skin sensitivity or nervous tension
- delays and disruptions to commerce and trade;
- A powerful idea that loses its shape before it can be executed.
The 5 degree temperatures from May 10th to 19th proved to be the most difficult period for busy minds. So take a deep walk, go swimming, get your body used to it, and avoid reading too much.
The combustion of mercury, especially around Kazimi, coincides with the sun on May 14th, and also has spiritual-enhancing properties. In Kazimi, Mercury is located in the “center of the sun” and its noblest qualities emerge: keen clarity, acute insight, and a mind aligned with a higher purpose. This is a great window for writing, meditation, and any work that requires deep concentration.
Combustion of Aries and Taurus
Mercury still begins its combust period in Aries (May 1-14). There, the fire of the constellation amplifies the already hot combustion. Communication will be direct and, in some cases, candid. Decisions are made quickly, but may need to be reconsidered. Mercury will then move into Taurus (from May 14th onwards). There, the earth’s energy on the ground will help cool the fire some, but burning will continue until May 26th.
Who is most affected?
Gemini Rising and Virgo Rising: Mercury rules both charts. You will feel this most directly. Watch your energy, adjust the pace of your communication, and avoid signing large contracts or launching new ventures at the height of your combustion. Please use the Kajimi window for deep work.
Aries rising: Combustion begins in your 1st house. An individual’s vitality and mental energy can fluctuate widely.
Scorpio rising: Later in May, Mercury combusts into your 7th house starting May 14th (Taurus). Partnership communication requires special attention.
practical instruction
- Slow down your written communications: Draft important emails and wait before sending them.
- Back up your data and double-check that your agreements are accurate
- Support your nervous system: meditation, pranayama, and enough sleep
- Prioritize Wednesdays for Mercury-related activities
- Avoid making irreversible decisions at the height of combustion
- Mark Kazimi as a focused writing or creative day. Your heart will become brighter temporarily.
Ayurveda and spiritual support
Mercury is associated with the energy of Vishnu. Chanting the Vishnu mantra or the Mercury mantra (Om Budaya Namaha) on Wednesday increases clarity. Green foods, moong dal, leafy vegetables nourish the mercury principle. Keep your nervous system cool and avoid overstimulation. News, social media, and a busy environment amplify the restlessness caused by combustion.
The Kazimi window is worth marking on your calendar. Deepen your meditation, start a new writing project, or do some in-depth journaling. What emerges from this inner Mercury phase can be surprisingly profound.
As always, thank you to my Guru and Jyotish Guru for their wisdom and guidance.
