Every week we update our Best New Songs playlist with some of the tracks that caught our attention, and we round up the best songs of the month in this segment. Here are the best songs of April 2026 in alphabetical order.

Brutalismus 3000, “I bring a gun to the mission” [feat. Boys Noize]

With the Electroclash revival becoming increasingly crowded, Brutalismus 3000 could be stuck in its lane. If you know anything about this German electro duo’s music, which is probably classified as techno, when their new single “I Bring My Gun to the Function” was released, Posted Two separate people on this genre’s subreddit went out of their way to point out that it belongs elsewhere. German producer Boyz Noize has been busy taking Nine Inch Nails’ industrial live show in a danceier direction, but he often skirts between these stylistic lines, making him an ideal collaborator for the lead single from Brutalism 3000’s new album. harmony100 gecs’ Dylan Brady and (check notes) Anya Taylor-Joy also appear. This is clearly a rowdy banger that suggests they’re aiming for a bigger stage. At least it proves they’re not the only ones maintaining their rights put one’s finger on the trigger.

Chanel beads “Song for the Messenger”

It’s only been a few days since the Chanel Bees released “Song for the Messenger,” and while I haven’t had a chance to listen to it at the corner store, Brooklyn Project’s Shane Reivers suggests that time is always slowing down. “This song is laughing at me,” he said of the song. your day will comealso called your day will come. (The album’s title seems to be laughing at us all a little bit.) What’s laughing at the person trying to get the message across is a mind cluttered with intrusive thoughts that refuses to find an outlet, perhaps too distracted by the sheer beauty of the song itself. Embellished with harsh textures (Zachary Paul’s violin, More Ease’s pedal steel, etc.), the song can barely mask its own tunicality, a means of submerging the world in slow motion and perhaps laughing back at it.

Kelela, “Idea 1”

Returning to the intimate world of Kerela is very easy. The opening melody of “Idea 1” is smooth and her falsetto instantly appealing, making it sound more like a proper introduction to a new project than a dusty old demo. But it didn’t take long for Kelela to realize that this was uncharted territory. Spiraling through the minefield of disappointment in an evasive relationship, she dips into shoegaze, offsetting the soothing harmonies of the chorus with grittier, more overwhelming guitars. This is essentially a song about a midwife, sung in a delicate, distant voice, staring at a wall that is closing in without fully integrating with it. Although it reminds me of the ambient moments of her last album. Ravenit’s a sound that sprinkles rock’n’roll throughout, and its loudness seems to be bubbling to the surface.

Man/Woman/Chainsaw, “nose dive”

When I interviewed Man/Woman/Chainsaw in late 2024, I had a feeling they were preparing something much bigger than the excellent EP they were promoting at the time. easy peasy. If anything, I was expecting a more chaotic sound from this dynamic London band, but I’m not at all surprised that “Nosedive,” the lead single from their debut album, actually sees them leaning in a different direction. It’s a gigantic, creeping singalong, immersed in the afterglow of being awakened by the sound of birds hitting glass. The line “Baby get me back up over you” inconspicuously appears in the second verse, before the song is euphorically repeated over and over again by the entire group, and that’s when I knew this song was going to exceed my expectations. Some bands strike gold and belt out great hooks without even realizing it. Men/Women/Chainsaws are ready to do their best.

Olivia Rodrigo “Drop Dead”

Olivia Rodrigo may not be sticking to the all-caps title format You seem so sad for a girl and so in loveBut “Drop Dead” finds her shining back into the world. Rather, the lead single itself could have been properly capitalized. A giddy, full-fledged reaction to a lowercase comment someone might have left under a romantic photo with the “Lovesong” soundtrack playing. Rodrigo, of course, names a different kind of Cure song: “You know all the lyrics to ‘Just Like Heaven’/And I know why he wrote it” is a flex that leaves plenty of room for this kind of headlong infatuation. Ironically, “Drop Dead” isn’t as immediate as Rodrigo’s earlier singles. I’ve heard people commenting on this film as something that could grow more, but of course that didn’t stop it from debuting at number one. Dan Nigro’s work is maximalist, but at first it sounded almost tame, too relaxed instead of really blowing away. But it’s a delicate balance. Incandescent strings, dizzying harmonies, and synths bring the fantasy to life, but it’s also a safe space before exploding at the end of the night (11pm to be exact).
