Most people learn about astrology through newspaper horoscopes, magazine columns, or social media posts promising what kind of Tuesday is ahead.
For years I thought it was astrology too.
A warning about communication mishaps and mysterious opportunities that come before lunch.
But the more I delved into astrology, the more I realized that actual astrology is far more nuanced than horoscopes, wedged between crossword puzzles and weather forecasts.
Whether you believe astrology is a meaningful tool for self-reflection or simply an interesting lens through which to view life, there are some common myths that are worth setting aside for a moment.
mythology #1: Astrology is a religion
One of the biggest misconceptions about astrology is that it belongs to a specific religion or belief system.
Astrology itself is not a religion. No worship, conversion, or membership card required.
People from a variety of spiritual backgrounds explore astrology, but there are also many who enjoy studying astrology from a purely psychological, historical, or symbolic perspective.
Astrology asks questions.
Religion often provides answers.
The two are not necessarily the same thing.
mythology #2: Astrology controls your life
Many people think that astrology means that the planets somehow control human behavior, like cosmic puppets pulling invisible strings.
Personally, I have never found astrology useful as an abdication of responsibility.
If anything, astrology reminds us of how much responsibility we have.
My birth chart may reveal patterns, strengths, challenges, and tendencies, but it cannot make choices for me. The stars may provide us with a map. they don’t drive cars.
mythology #3: Astrology predicts all events
Another common myth is that astrology can predict every detail of the future.
Most astrologers view astrology not as a crystal ball, but as a weather forecast.
Weather forecasts may suggest favorable conditions.
It can highlight potential issues.
It can refer to a period of growth, change, opportunity, or reflection.
But knowing that it’s likely to rain is not the same as knowing exactly where every raindrop will fall.
mythology #4: Astrology removes free will
This may be the biggest misconception.
Even if two people are born at the exact same time and place, their lives will still unfold differently.
Astrology may explain possibilities, but possibilities are not promises.
Chart shows ingredients. life No recipe yet.
Why astrology continues to fascinate me
The longer I study astrology, the less I am interested in predictions and the more I am interested in considering it.
Astrology doesn’t tell me who I have to be. that It invites me to explore who I already am.
Sometimes it provides insight.
Sometimes questions arise.
Sometimes it helps us see familiar patterns from a different perspective.
And to be honest, that feels much more valuable than predicting whether or not you’ll be lucky next Thursday.
Astrology is not a cage made by the stars.
It is a mirror to the soul.
The sky may depict possibilities, but our choices give us color, courage, and meaning.
Eventually, the planet may point in the direction of the road.
We are the only ones who decide how the story progresses.
Keep your feet on the ground, keep growing, and look at nonsense a little sideways.
