“Being kind is a choice. When we make this choice, we begin to connect. This connection is the source of our happiness.” – Timothy Victor

are you happy?

A Harvard University study on kindness and happiness revealed a deep connection between these two concepts. Is being kind part of your personality? How do you think, feel, and act in your life?

A Harvard University study defines a kind personality as having the qualities of being friendly, generous, and considerate. This combination of who we are increases our happiness.

According to research from Harvard University, when we fit this profile, we are more likely to create happiness in our lives. People with this profile have reduced social anxiety and increased social connectedness.

Living a kind life strengthens social bonds and creates a sense of belonging, which is a key element of our well-being, while fostering gratitude and mutual respect. Research from Hubbard University consistently shows that engaging in acts of kindness increases personal happiness.

Extensive research from positive psychology, neuroscience, and social research shows strong evidence that practicing kindness has a lasting impact on our well-being.

At this point, I would like to share my understanding of kindness. It comes from my personal experience over the years. I will be 72 years old this year, 2026.

Being kind is a choice

Like many other choices we make in life, being kind is one of the choices we make. Once you make this choice, being kind becomes a way of life. It fosters our connection to each other and to God.

Being kind creates connection between us humans. This connection creates happiness.

act of kindness

Acts of kindness can be subtle, like a smile or a sincere compliment. Sometimes it’s just holding someone’s door as they enter and exit the store. You may also be patient and considerate.

You can also choose to volunteer, offer to help a neighbor with their yard work, and develop a kind personality by helping out at every opportunity in life.

Being kind is a way of life, if you choose to do so. Greet those nearby with a smile, nod, or friendly hello. Practice having a soft gaze that expresses warmth and mutual respect.

Kindness fosters our connection to each other and to God.

border of kindness

We all need to have boundaries in our lives. This allows us to be comfortable in any social situation or relationship. The fact that there are boundaries when it comes to expressing kindness is a reality we all have to face.

It’s much better to be mentally prepared for this reality than to have to suddenly and awkwardly deal with people who aren’t very nice.

Unfortunately, some of us humans have unkind intentions. These are predators on many levels. Some seek to control, others manipulate for personal gain.

This is said to not discourage you. But remember, such people actually exist.

The key to expressing emotional kindness is to not expect anything in return. If you stick to this rule, you will avoid disappointment.

Boundaries are just a way for others to know how they are allowed to treat you. In this case, how others are allowed to react to your gift of kindness.

It is kind to see the good in everyone without turning a blind eye to what is there.

be honest

In the field of mental health, I-statements are a great discipline for asserting yourself in any situation or relationship. This is an effective way to tell others what you are and are not happy about.

When making negative comments, avoid using the pronoun “you”, such as “I could do more to help you complete these chores” instead of “I would appreciate your help with more chores”.

Using that pronoun can start a discussion. Some may feel that a conflict is approaching. I statements are assertive and avoid hurting anyone’s feelings.

There are two main types of boundaries. It is flexible and rigid. Examples of flexible boundaries include saying that you need time to yourself or that you would like to have dinner with you on Friday instead of Saturday.

Examples of strict boundaries include not being interested in spending time with someone who imposes their will on me, or feeling like my kindness is seen as a weakness.

Try to be kind to everyone. Please try to take care of everyone. But if you ever need to empower yourself, know that you have the right to be comfortable in any situation or relationship.

gentleness of penetration

Harvard University recognizes a phenomenon known as osmotic kindness. Their research found that kindness can be contagious. This is based on the fact that not only adults, but also children imitate behavior.

Over time, children and adults will be more likely to express kindness when exposed to examples of kindness.

acknowledge kindness

Recently, I was shopping at the grocery store and as I was reaching for an item that was out of reach, someone came in and handed it to me. Looking into her eyes, I couldn’t help but say, “Thank you, you’re so kind.”

Her whole face lit up. It was a very happy moment. My acknowledgment of her kindness meant more than just gratitude.

Recently, due to a physical illness, I have had to use a cane, and many people have held the door for me as I enter and exit the store. It was amazing to see the joy on their faces when I acknowledged their kindness.

It’s amazing how anxious people are about being kind, and how happy they are when their kindness is recognized. By telling them that they were kind, the connection of kindness became more meaningful than just a simple expression of gratitude.

When we do so, kindness unites us. This connection creates happiness.

core virtues

As in Christianity, kindness is at the heart of all teachings, a core virtue. It is also a core virtue of Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, and Hinduism. To me, this is a great fact that these major belief systems are in agreement.

Remember: Being kind unites us and brings happiness into our lives and the lives of others.

Remember that kindness is contagious. When we are kind, we inspire others to do the same.

Author biography

Timothy Victor is a spiritual writer who has published three self-help books. He rebuilt his life from a clean slate after complete memory loss and ego regression.
