What matters is not whether democracy is dead, but rather a transformation into a form that suppresses authentic participation and accountability. Similarly, liberalism is not a fixed entity, but a tradition of conflict that frees and alienates different groups.
Because political thinking heroes were well known before a generation, Sheldon Wallin described democracy as a “fug,” and institutionalized or procedural forms of its temporary, episodic, and participatory nature.
