Those who remember the 1980s firsthand can view the hairstyles of the decade through a completely different lens than those who only saw the looks through photos, movies, and all-too-old music videos. As a child of the ’80s, I can vividly remember the angles, shapes, swoops, and sizes of that era’s trends, the crunch of frozen frizz, the scent of aquanet, and the sound of brushes running through hairspray.

We never thought we’d see a return to the look we wore 40 years ago, but with celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Keiki Palmer, and Nicole Kidman subtly bringing back the mole bangs, it’s paved the way for a more intense ’80s look. As with all beauty trends throughout the ages, there may have been a time when they were considered embarrassing, but hindsight often sheds new light on previously trending styles.

“80s hairstyles were the boldest expression of natural texture,” he says. dusty schlabacha hairstylist in Los Angeles. “Rather than chasing perfect definition, curls and waves were about great flexibility in their raw, organic state, usually amplified with a ‘bigger is better’ attitude. The look was about freedom, individuality, and the confidence that comes from taking up space in your hair.”

It wasn’t uncommon for people to get perms to create that day-to-day texture that genetics didn’t give us, but with today’s abundance of styling tools and products (gadgets and formulas that are unimaginably futuristic compared to what we had back then), you don’t have to make permanent changes to emulate your favorite hair look, even if your hair is naturally straight. Don’t you believe us? Read on for some of our favorite quintessential ’80s styles that are easy to recreate at home.
