This could potentially be big news for a group of people that I have anecdotally found older formulas to be too harsh on their skin. “If Endophytol is anti-inflammatory, as it claims to be, it would be a great addition to a formulation, given that pure ascorbic acid preparations tend to be irritating for many people,” Perkins says. “I think this shows that they are listening to consumer feedback and improving the formula in a way that is more effective and easier to use.” (SkinCeuticals’ research team conducted an in vitro component study of endophytol, but the results of that study won’t be available until near the end of this year or early next year.)

New ingredient: Carnosine

The second new ingredient is carnosine, which, unlike endophytol, is another antioxidant and dipeptide that has been used in skin care for some time, Perkins says. “Simply put, it helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles,” she explained, noting that this addition is “in line with the longevity trend currently booming in the skin care industry.” (See? It’s inevitable.)

Lynch says he added carnosine to the already antioxidant-rich formula after realizing that “vitamin C may not be the best ingredient for combating glycation, a natural process that can lead to early signs of aging like the aforementioned fine lines and wrinkles and yellowing of the skin.” “We think carnosine is a really good ingredient for this,” Lynch says. Vitamin C can also help with fine lines and wrinkles, but its real strength lies in whitening and preventing discoloration, he added. The addition of carnosine is intended to supplement ascorbic acid and give even more pronounced results.

Differences in scent and texture

While our editors believe there are slight differences in the texture and scent of the new formula, Lynch says loyal customers should expect much of the same. “It’s going to be very similar for all consumers, and I think they’ll enjoy it,” Lynch says of the texture, which feels like a rich but light liquid and fairly moisturizing for a serum.

The aroma of the legendary hot dog isn’t going away either. That’s because, as Lynch says, it comes from a blend of ingredients in the original formulation and has not been removed.

Differences in packaging

There are no visible differences in the new packaging. CEF continues to come in an amber 1-ounce bottle with a dropper applicator. The new label is exactly the same as the original and there is no specific mention of the two new ingredients other than the ingredient list.

that’s it! Otherwise, the product and $185 price remain the same. “This was a really challenging project,” Lynch says of trying to update the product without disappointing its legion of loyal fans. “We are really proud that we were able to maintain the essence of the original formula.”

Editor’s review

I got my bottle of the new formula about a week before it was released, so my impressions are still in the “first” stage. For me, the texture of the serum (with light hydration) feels and smells pretty much the same as the original (like the OG, which is often described as “hot dog water” and is a pleasant scent to me). My skin didn’t change or become irritated right away, but it also didn’t become sensitive with the older formula.
