FAQ
Is it okay to use BHA toner every day?
The amount of BHA used depends on your skin type. “Yes, people with normal to oily skin can use BHA daily,” says Dr Woolley-Lloyd. “People with dry skin may need to use it less often.” BHAs like salicylic acid can help unclog pores and reduce excess oil, so they’re well tolerated by acne-prone skin types. That said, if you’re new to chemical exfoliants or have sensitive skin, it’s wise to start slow and build up to daily use. Also, don’t forget sunscreen, as BHA can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight.
Which ingredients should not be combined with BHA?
BHA can be combined with many ingredients, but certain combinations may be too harsh. “People with dehydrated or sensitive skin may experience excessive dryness if they combine salicylic acid toners with drying or exfoliating ingredients such as other acids, retinol, or benzoyl peroxide,” says Dr. Woolley-Lloyd. That said, “combinations of these ingredients are very common for people with normal to oily skin.” Another combination to watch out for is vitamin C and acids such as BHA. “Because the stability of vitamin C is pH dependent,” she added. Consider alternating the active ingredients or using them at different times of the day to minimize irritation.
Is there an ideal percentage of BHA?
There is no perfect proportion of BHA and it depends on your skin type and intended use. “The concentration typically used for acne is 2%,” says Dr. Woolley-Lloyd. “For general use, concentrations range from 0.5 to 2%,” she points out.If you have sensitive skin, “lower concentrations may be better,” as tolerance may vary depending on your skin’s strength. “It really depends on the formula, but in theory, the higher the percentage, the greater the exfoliating effect,” she added.

How to test and review products
when allure Once we test a product, our editors look at it from all angles to ensure we can best serve you. We check ingredients, scrutinize brand claims and, when appropriate, research peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing every product included in each review, we rely on experts in fields such as dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine to help vet ingredients and formulations.
For our list of the best toners for sensitive skin, we considered each product’s performance across five key categories: product ingredients and effectiveness, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product experience. All products have been judged outstanding in each category by our editorial team of in-house writers, editors, and contributors, in addition to special consideration by dermatologists.
