To say Emily Hubbard is busy is an understatement. For the past eight years, she’s run her own vintage home goods, handcrafted gifts, and reclaimed furniture business. One Rose Decorationafter three moves and expansions outside Richmond, they’ve added a second branch on Hull Street Road in Chesterfield. They’ve also started offering sign painting classes at their store on Grove Road in Midlothian, and to celebrate, they’ll be holding anniversary parties at both stores on August 24th.
Additionally, she’s renovated a 1950s Shasta Starflight camper for a pop-up shop, published two books, and handcrafts many of the repurposed items seen in her showroom.
It’s all a labor of love: “If she has an idea, I tell her, ‘Help me or get out of the way,’ and whatever it is, she’ll do it,” says Hubbard’s mother, Cindy, who often helps out at both stores.
Lately, Hubbard has been focusing on expanding its retail presence. Though both stores are known for their reclaimed furniture and construction salvage, Hubbard notes that the Chesterfield store has a much larger selection of clothing. Bohemian Chic Styles is mostly wholesale items handpicked by Hubbard, but also carries pieces from local makers. Junk Talesmakes everything from baby clothes to tote bags using recycled fabrics.
“There’s a lot of stuff that’s one of a kind,” Hubbard said. “There’s something really special about buying something that somebody made with their own hands, instead of just buying something on Amazon. No matter how much I grow and how big the business gets, I don’t think that’ll ever change.”
Hubbard has four employees and occasional help from family, but she hopes to grow to a point where she can rediscover her passion for creating. “My personal goal is for the store to be self-sustaining and I can actually go out and make art,” she says. “That’s one thing I’d love to do. [gotten harder]”I’m super busy and I just want to grow my business and do what I really love.”
