Feeling a bit unmotivated at home lately? Check out these free and money saving ideas for sprucing up your home. Perfect for when you want something new but are on a tight budget!
Are you feeling unhappy or stuck in your current home and wishing for a home that’s a little (or a lot!) bigger, a little newer, or something that suits your current lifestyle a little better?
It’s tough to feel this way, especially when the housing market is booming and your budget isn’t in sync.
Many thanks to everyone involved Clever ideas from the Facebook communityWe’ve put together some handy tips to help you if you’re spending your time lounging at home and want to do something different.
Many of these ideas are “quick fixes” that will instantly brighten up the look of your home, and many of them don’t cost a cent.
Free ideas to clean your home:
1. Remove clutter.
Grab a trash bag and a donation box and go through each room and start throwing out things you don’t need, want, use, or love. Organize each room as you go. At the end of the day, you might just feel like you have a new home.

2. Move your furniture.
It’s fun to switch things up, and you might be surprised at how much a new arrangement can change the feel of a room (it’s especially fun to do this in a kid’s room!) Of course, if you can’t find a new arrangement you like, you can always put everything back.
3. Consider the functionality of your home.
Would it make sense to have a small bench and coat hooks next to the front door for guests? Is there a way to create more “hidden storage” for your children’s toys? Can you display your children’s artwork in a way that is both decorative and practical? Do you need more pantry storage? If so, can you create it in a separate room, closer to the kitchen?
You may not be able to solve all of your problems right away, but you can at least start thinking about how your home currently functions and how it could ideally function better in the future.
4. Focus on what you love about your home.
Even if you don’t have the time, money, or energy to devote to a home right now, you can still be grateful that you actually have one.
Start a gratitude journal and list the things you love about your home. Make it your goal to write down at least one thing every day for a month.
5. Organize a free home décor swap.
Reach out to your friends, family and neighbors and invite them to a “decor swap” where everyone brings along a decorative item they’re tired of and you can take turns exchanging it for a new item to freshen up your space a bit.
Serve some tasty treats and enjoy a fun-filled afternoon!
6. Deep clean your entire home.
Sometimes a deep clean is all it takes to restore the beauty of your home, and a day of scrubbing and cleaning might stop you wishing for a bigger home.
Open the windows (weather permitting) and enjoy the fresh breeze that blows into your newly thoroughly cleaned home.
7. Light the candle.
Simply light up your favorite seasonal scent from your stock and your home will soon be filled with a wonderful aroma.
If you don’t have any candles on hand, why not try making this easy stovetop potpourri?
8. Get out of the house.
If you’re feeling a bit trapped or on the verge of going crazy, get outside and take a walk.
You can go fishing, hiking, picnicking in the local park or even go camping over a long weekend.
Sometimes getting away from home for a little while can help you to appreciate it.
How to clean your house cheaply
9. Buy new hand towels.
Check the sale section of your local home improvement store to see if they have discounted hand towels you like, and if they do, buy a few to pop in your kitchen or bathroom for an instant makeover.
10. Buy fresh flowers.
If you have a garden, by all means, pick some flowers yourself. If you don’t, buy a bouquet the next time you go shopping and bring some color and freshness to your kitchen table.
Tip: You can get really cheap flowers at Aldi, Walmart, and Trader Joe’s!
11. Paint.
Check out your local Lowe’s or Home Depot for paint in different colors. This way you can often get paint very cheaply, and paint can go a long way in improving the look of a room. Some ideas:
- Paint your front door to brighten up your entryway.
- Spray paint vent covers, cabinet handles, or light fixtures to change the look and feel of a room.
- Painting all your picture frames the same color will create a unified look throughout the room.
- Paint your cupboards and larger pieces of furniture.
12. Put your sewing skills to the test.
If you can sew, try making new pillowcases, curtains, slipcovers, etc. If you don’t want to spend money on expensive fabrics, you can use sheets and curtains from a thrift store.
13. Buy second-hand items.
If you’re looking for new furniture, you can save a lot of money by buying second-hand from Facebook Marketplace, thrift stores, and garage sales.
If you have a discount home store in your area (such as Habitat Restorations), you may be able to find paint, tile, and other building materials at low prices as well.
14. Learn to DIY.
You can save a lot of money by learning how to do it yourself. YouTube videos and Pinterest boards are very helpful.
15. Start small.
Make some of the small improvements that have been on your list for a while, like replacing a leaky faucet, fixing a creaky door hinge, changing a burnt out light bulb, replacing the batteries in your fire alarm, or trimming the bushes in front of your house.
Over time, these small fixes will make you feel much better about your home.
16. Create your own private hideaway in your home.
Pick a corner in your home and create your own little hideaway. Find a cute chair at a thrift store or garage sale and add fun items that make the corner your own (a bookshelf, books, candles, plants, a throw, etc.).
Even a corner of your bedroom or an empty closet can become your own space.
