There’s nothing quite like honey butter for a holiday meal. This is such a simple recipe, but it really elevates any special meal and always reminds me of Thanksgiving dinner at my great-aunt Ina’s house when I was a kid.

Honey butter ingredients:

  • unsalted butterbecame soft
  • honey
  • Optional additives: other spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cayenne

How to make honey butter:

Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl (or the bowl of a stand mixer) and whisk until combined. It’s really easy!

Honey butter ratio:

Honey butter is made with a 2:1 ratio of butter and honey.

For example, you can add 1/2 cup (1 stick) of butter to 1/4 cup of honey. Alternatively, add 1/2 cup honey to 1 cup (2 sticks) of butter. Based on this ratio, you can create larger or smaller batches.

You can also adjust if you use other mix-in ingredients, such as cinnamon or nutmeg.

  • easy dinner rolls
  • rosemary focaccia bread

What is a butterboard?

A butter board is a cutting board on which softened butter is spread and other ingredients are mixed into the butter or sprinkled on top.

You can use a knife to remove the butter and spread it on bread or crackers, or you can dip it directly onto the board. I like to think of this as a buttery version of a cheese plate. It’s a great appetizer or garnish to a meal.

There are many ways to make a butter board! I decided to take some of the honey butter from this recipe and add a few drops of food coloring to create an artist palette-inspired butter board.

FAQ

What is the best way to soften butter?

The easiest way to soften butter is to remove it from the refrigerator and bring it to room temperature the night before you use it.

If you need to soften butter in a hurry, you can do it in the microwave for a short time (15 seconds on high, then check on it before 15 seconds) to prevent it from melting.

How do you make a butter board?

Spread softened butter on the surface of a serving tray or cutting board, sprinkle with sea salt or other ingredients (like all bagel seasoning), and you’ve got a fun party tray.

Does honey butter need to be refrigerated?

no. However, if you want to keep your honey butter for longer than one day, store it in the refrigerator and let it come to room temperature before eating.

Can honey butter be frozen?

Yes, honey butter can be frozen for at least 2 months or more. Thaw in the refrigerator and bring to room temperature before enjoying.

Instead of mixing all the ingredients to make this honey butter recipe, you can also spread the butter and sprinkle lightly with honey and sea salt for a honey butter board option.

You can serve any kind of toasted bread or crackers with the butter board. Some of my favorite items include: toasted bagel, Naanand croissant.
