“For a long time I was dressed for utility to the point that I looked effective. The little bit of me was always thinking, ‘One day, I’ll figure out what I’m wearing when I’m small.” Then while writing my third novel I realized I didn’t want to get this dress any more in the summer. “I lived in New York City for 20 years. I thought about why so many people, including myself, move to this city. So I put it to my character, Rata, Other Rata. She starts using the email address of someone who shares her name, and instead attends parties and gallery openings. She enters these circles using fashion as a passport. ”

“I really admire costume designers Matthew Hemessas And his work girls5eva. I actually sent him a cold email about how 40 women wanted to write about finding her personal style. He was very nice and gave me great advice. His #1 hint was to embrace collisions of patterns and wear unexpected color combinations. Matthew says that bright colors feel natural confidence and that the collisions of patterns work.
