14 Best Mother-Daughter Movies and TV Shows to Watch Together
SHARE

Some stories know how to grab you. The zipper of the wedding dress is closed. Hospital waiting room. A daughter whose mother pretends to be fine and goes to college. One minute I’m looking at a stranger, and the next I’m texting my mom at 11pm on a Tuesday for no reason I can’t explain.

The best mother-daughter relationships on TV

These 14 movies and shows do just that. Some are due to immediately obvious relationships, such as your best friend’s mother, a complicated relationship, or a relationship where no one tells you the truth. And other things you didn’t know you needed until you actually needed them.

Donna and Sophie Mamma Mia!

Donna and Sophie are more than just mother and daughter, they are each other’s world, and this movie never lets you forget that. The scene where Donna helps Sophie put on her wedding dress is a scene that never fails to captivate you every time. Technically, Mamma Mia! teeth It’s a movie about a father, but it’s actually about a mother raising her daughter single-handedly, and somehow somehow succeeding in doing the impossible.

Rory and Lorelai gilmore girls

Lorelai and Rory are the gold standard for best friend mothers. I’m a fast talker, addicted to coffee, and completely codependent, but somehow (almost) I’ve never felt unhealthy. The drama depicts their lives over several years, and manages to make every step feel believable: the teenage friction, the estrangement from college, the slow realization that their mother was right more than they wanted to admit.

Anna and Tess whimsical friday

Anna and Tess can’t stand each other. It’s not until they are forced to live in each other’s lives for a day, at which point they realize that they are not that different after all. It’s a comedy at first, but the moment it stops being funny is when it hits the ground running. The switch is more than just a plot device. This is the most literal version of what every mother and daughter must ultimately consider. “I don’t know what it’s like to be her.”

Daphne, Maggie, May, Milly, Because I said so

Daphne intervenes in her youngest daughter’s love life with specific, targeted over-involvement that will make you laugh until you realize it. This movie is light, but it deserves a spot on this list for one reason. Because it’s the most honest portrayal of a mother who loves her daughter so completely that she hasn’t yet figured out how to humanize her daughter. Every daughter has probably felt that way. Most of them eventually figured it out too.

zo and jane jane the virgin

Jane and Zo are only 16 years apart. I mean, they grew up together as much as they raised each other. And the show knows exactly what to do with it. What makes it unusual is the third layer. The presence of Xo’s mother, Alba, turns every mother-daughter dynamic in the show into a negotiation that spans three generations. You look at it and involuntarily start calculating about your own family.

Tami and Julie friday night lights

Tami Taylor is the kind of mother who makes you want to be a better person. They are principled, warm, and have no interest in being liked, even though being right is important to them. Her relationship with Julie is the most realistic depiction of a good mother and difficult daughter on this list. Julie is frustrated that her daughter could be the only one who has everything she needs, but Tami doesn’t make it an issue and loves Julie anyway. That’s the part that fascinates you.

Marmee, Joe, Amy, Meg, Beth, Little Women

March isn’t in control of this story, her daughters are, but if you remove her, the whole thing falls apart. She sets an example so quietly that you don’t realize it until you are molded by it. This is either the most effective parenting thing or the most devastating thing to do growing up, depending on the day. Greta Gerwig’s 2019 film adaptation had everyone in tears.

rebecca and kate this is us

Rebecca and Kate’s relationship is hard to watch because it’s equal parts loving and loaded, and hard to look away from over the decades in a way that makes it impossible to reduce them both to a single version of themselves. The show depicts Rebecca as a young mother, a middle-aged mother, and an old mother, and the cumulative effect of all three can break you. Once you finish the episode, you’ll be convinced that you need to call your mom right away and that you need to be alone for a minute first.

lady bird and marion lady bird

Christine (she claims Lady Bird) wants to get away from Sacramento, her mother’s house, and all the expectations Marion has for her, and the film never suggests that she’s wrong about that. Instead, we get to see a side of Marion that’s just as generous, and that’s what makes this movie as destructive as it is good. The last three minutes will reorganize something within you.

Mia and Pearl, Elena, Izzy, Lexi, small fires everywhere

Mia and Pearl are a team that sometimes involves a single mother and her only daughter. Bigoted, loyal, and totally unprepared for what happens when the outside world invades. Elena and her daughters are the opposite, a mother who loves her children within a blueprint they never agreed to. In this show, these two versions of motherhood directly collide, and neither is immune from the problem. It’s unpleasant in a good way.

Kate and Mara, Tully and Cloud, firefly lane

This song features two tracks at the same time. One is Kate’s complicated and tender relationship with her daughter, the other is Tully’s lifelong reckoning with a mother who was never fully present. One shows what it’s like when love exists but communication breaks down. The other shows a mother figure that was never meant to appear. Together, they argue that no matter what your relationship with your mother is, you’re probably not as alone as you think.

Jackie, Isabel, Anna stepmother

Jackie is dying and knows it. In other words, she spends the movie doing the most selfless thing a mother can do: preparing others to love their children long after she’s gone. A movie about rivalry suddenly becomes a movie about sacrifice without us even noticing the change. The scene ends with her telling her daughter that she will miss her.

Aurora and Emma conditions of affection

Aurora and Emma drive each other crazy in the first half of the film, and in the second half prove that none of that matters. It covers 30 years of a mother-daughter relationship, and every step of the way, from the desperate attempt to escape, to the moment of slow return, to the moment when she realizes that her mother is the only one who truly knows her, is well-depicted. It’s not an easy watch, but it’s well worth it.

Murin and Shelby steel magnolia

Everything on this list is built upon this list. Murrin and Shelby have a love that is present in full volume in every moment, every decision, and every outcome, and no matter how many times you watch it, it’s impossible to prepare for what happens to them. The graveyard scene is one of the best performances ever put to film, and for some reason it still hits you in such a way that it still feels like a gift. If possible, watch it with your mom.
