My girlfriend recently told me that she asks herself this question when she gets dressed in the morning. What’s so comfortable that you forget you’re wearing it?
I’ve been thinking about this for weeks. What she’s really asking is: What can I wear to do this? Get used to it instead of execute? Can you get through the day without constant adjustments like pulling down a hem, undoing a tag, or feeling a slight discomfort in the waistband that seemed fine but turns out to be torture at 2pm?
This is the point when wearing clothes. That it doesn’t look good (although that’s a good thing). But forget it. after wearing something Please leave your body alone for a while.
I’m at the stage where I want everything in my closet to pass this test. So, I will introduce what was effective. Here are the fall wardrobe essentials that I wear on repeat, along with steps on how to think about them and what they actually do in your wardrobe.

1. Cardigan
favorite: Cezanne Emile Cardigan, cezanne gaspard cardigan, old hag
Cardigans are the most underrated item in modern life. It’s a jacket that doesn’t try too hard. Is it too hot? Please take it off. Is it too cold? Button it up.
Two of Cezanne’s styles that I keep repeating have the perfect proportions of French bone and slouch. It’s snug enough that you don’t look like you’re drowning, and roomy enough that you can eat your fill without regrets. I have worked with Cezanne for many years and am familiar with their cardigans. They understand that women need clothes that can go from desk to drink without having to change clothes.
Baba uses local natural wool to create pieces that make you feel like you’re being hugged by someone you truly love. The kind you can wear for 10 years (as long as you can protect it from bugs!).
Instructions: Buy one really good cardigan. Then wear it for 3 days in a row to see if anyone notices. (They don’t.)
2. T-shirts
Can I talk about how much emotional energy I spent trying to find the perfect t-shirt? I’ve literally spent hours searching for one that fits, snug, and looks like I’m not trying, but not giving up.
I live in oversized T-shirts. It’s a style where you just tuck in your jeans in the front, and suddenly you’ve realized your proportions. my frame tee Great for getting that baby t-shirt look that doesn’t look like you shopped in the juniors department. and Kule’s The Modern Striped T-Shirt It makes me feel like I have a home in the Hamptons (I don’t have one).
Target and Walmart also have great options, but you should keep an eye out for them and try them on if you have a chance in store. If you find something you like, buy a few because you won’t keep making the same style forever.
Steps: Buy 3 of the same T-shirt in different colors. congratulations. I got my uniform. This means you now have mental space to do more important things.
3. Jeans
favorite: reform, maria stanley, mill, H&M
This is a controversial view of mine, but it directly contradicts what I just said about forgetting what you’re wearing. The perfect pair of jeans is worth a little discomfort.
I know, I know. This goes against the whole theme of this piece. But listen. Sometimes things are more important than simplicity. A great silhouette is one of them. Even if the waistband is a little snug and a little restrictive when sitting, I can tolerate that feeling. consciousness If it means my jeans actually look good, then I’m wearing denim.
Here I draw the line between comfort and compromise. my Reformation Greer mid-rise straight jeans My legs look like they’ve been going on for days. of maria stanley The cut achieves something architectural that cheaper denim can’t do. even me H&M Harper high-rise wide-leg jeans— the ones I wore before I became a submissive — still hold their shape and make me feel like I know what I’m doing.
There’s a difference between the comfort of “I forgot I was wearing this” and the discomfort of “this is actively hurting me.” I’m not advocating pain. What I’m trying to say is that sometimes I feel like I’m touching my jeans. And if it looks that much better, that’s the tradeoff.
Command: Find jeans that make you look great, even if you’re conscious of what you’re wearing. Not everything has to go away. Some things should be announced quietly but confidently.
4. Sleeveless mock turtleneck
favorite: cezanne
Things I bought in September for “just browsing” turned into necessities in October that I wondered, “How did I live without this?” I wore them 47 times in 6 weeks.
Cezanne’s Johann Jumper Wear it under a cardigan, over long sleeves, with a silk skirt, with ratty jeans, or tucked into everything. A mock neck allows you to sit up straight and feel more united, even when you’re in an existential crisis.
Description: Buy one. You can wear it 7 different ways in one week. This is called being French.
5. Belt
favorite: madewell
When I packed my bags for a trip to steamboat I threw it in last month this belt At the very end, it has become an item that will elevate any outfit.
Here’s what I realized: A belt is the difference between wearing an outfit and wearing a belt clothing. It’s a punctuation mark. A good belt can add just the right amount of western flair to a basic T-shirt and jeans. It is written like this. Yes, I thought about this and it wasn’t that difficult.
Instructions: You will need one very good leather belt. Stop thinking of belts as an option.
6. Black slacks
favorite: rooty
everyone is making a fuss Ruti’s On the Loose work pants As much as we hate to admit when the internet is right, the internet is right.
That’s what The Slacks are all about, and yes, they have a capital T and S because they have earned that level of respect. They occupy the perfect space between “trying” and “giving up.” They are made to look like adults with retirement savings. It’s relaxing, so you can even take an unscheduled nap depending on the situation.
On days when jeans feel too casual, I reach for a pair of rooty black pants, but I don’t wear anything that requires dry cleaning or conscious thought. They are sleeveless mock turtleneck. Pair it with a half-tucked oversized T-shirt. Wear mules when you want to feel like you have your life together, wear sneakers when you want to feel like you’re fooling everyone. thought I have my life together.
The genius of slacks is that they look intentional, not precious. They’re good at photography, but that’s more important than we’d like to admit. And since it’s black, it goes with everything and hides the fact that I’ve worn it four times this week.
Order: Buy those slacks everyone is talking about. Wear it repeatedly. Understand that sometimes the hype is justified and the algorithm knows what you actually need.
7. Sweater
favorite: american vintage, maria stanley old hag
I have a collection of sweaters for small villages. But what I’m actually wearing is American vintage east crew neck Balanced weight and lightness, maria stanley ryan knit It felt like a hug; old hag A piece that you will probably give to your children.

favorite: vintage louis vuitton, Rag & Bone
The most loved bag right now is mine. vintage louis vuitton bucket bag and This rag & bone bag It has become my practical favorite.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: Sometimes the best bag isn’t necessarily the prettiest. It will just make your life easier. Rag & Bone is the perfect size so you won’t lose your keys in the deep end. This is a boring metric that actually matters when you live in your bag every day.
Description: Find a bag that makes your life easier. Functionality is better than beauty. My dream is to have a bag that combines both.
11. Scarf
favorite: Ben Vienvintage found from Japan
Scarves have been in use for about 2,000 years. The French never stopped wearing it. they always know. The easiest way to make something boring look interesting is to wear something around your neck.
I keep it simple ben vien scarf I keep it in my bag for emergencies (when I feel empty wearing all black clothes). If I want to lift my mood, I also buy a brightly colored vintage scarf from Japan.

12. Coat

of cezanne will jacket It makes you feel like Paris without trying too hard. of maria stanley milo jacket A simple method that probably took someone years to figure out. and, Barbour Beaufort® Waxed Jacket It’s practical and a little masculine. I actually wear it when the weather changes and I need something that works rather than something that I pose with.
At least two fall coats are required. Something that makes you feel like the best version of yourself. And that I don’t think about it at all.
Instructions: Invest in the one coat that makes you feel like you know something. Buy something you can forget about. Switch it up depending on whether you want to impress yourself or just stay warm.
This fall, my wardrobe became a tool for forgetting. I don’t mean it in a bad way, but what my girlfriend meant was when you put something on and then take it off.
The goal isn’t to have the most interesting wardrobe or the latest pieces. The goal is to get dressed and continue with your day.
