New Scholarship Honors SOPHIE’s Legacy by Empowering Emerging Female, Trans, and Non-Binary Creatives in Electronic Music

The scholarship aims to provide financial support and access to resources for emerging women, trans and non-binary university students pursuing careers in audio engineering and electronic music production.

The initiative, unveiled earlier this month, is part of the organization’s broader mission to dismantle the barriers faced in underrated voices in music, particularly male-dominated areas such as production and engineering. The Scholarship Fund is designed to celebrate Sophie’s legacy by fostering creatives who break the boundaries of a new generation. “Sophie’s legacy is a beacon of inspiration for countless creators,” he said in an official statement that he was moving the needle. “Her innovation continues to shape the future of music. As we live in the pioneer of the next generation, we are excited to celebrate her indelible mark.”

Successful applicants will receive between $5,000 and $10,000 in financial aid. This can be used for tuition fees and other education-related expenses. Scholarships are open to US citizens and residents, and applications are accepted until April 27, 2025.

The legacy of Sonic Innovation

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Sophie (1986–2021) was a pioneering force in the experimental pop and electronic music scenes. Known for her work as a producer, singer and songwriter, she helped define “hyperpop” sound with a futuristic, anti-genre approach to music. Sophie’s influence has grown far beyond her discography. “We create this fund to celebrate Sophie’s unique contributions and to support others like her forging pass in an industry that overlooks non-traditional and marginalized voices,” an organization’s spokesperson said.

Scholarship applicants must be enrolled in an accredited university program and focus on audio engineering, music production, or electronic music. The Select Committee considers economic needs, artistic vision and commitment to promoting diversity in music.

The Power of Charli XCX and the Tribute

Sophie’s legacy continues to resonate with artists around the world, including longtime collaborators. Charli XCX. In her speech at the 2025 Britt Awards, she accepted the award for Best Dance Act. Charli paid tribute to Sophie along with other influential artists such as Daft Punk, Aphex Twin, and Robyn.

“None of us is here without Sophie,” Charlie said, highlighting the producer’s deep influence on today’s music scene.

Charli also honored Sophie with her latest album BladeIn a recent interview that features an emotionally recharged track “So I.” nmeshe described the song as a way to deal with grief and reflect their friendship. “The record has songs that talk about his relationship with Sophie,” Charlie said. “Essentially, dealing with grief is the purpose of the song. It’s very real. All the lyrics are what I text my friends.”
