Amnesty International reveals disproportionate media coverage of transgender people in the UK
A major new Amnesty International report has revealed that media coverage of transgender people in the UK is disproportionate, despite the trans community making up just 0.5% of the population.
Amnesty International’s analysis of UK media coverage from January 2020 to April 2025 found that the country’s four major news organizations produced around 17,000 articles on trans-related issues, publishing an average of nine articles a day.
Researchers argue that the scale of the coverage far outweighs both the public interest and the actual influence transgender people have within British society.
Amnesty’s findings suggest that much of the coverage in the British press is overwhelmingly negative, often treating transgender people as controversial.
Researchers argue that this constant reporting cycle has helped to propel the debate around sex and gender into a defining political issue, despite evidence suggesting voters care far more about the cost of living, housing and the NHS.
While transgender rights and gender identity were not top of mind for the public ahead of the 2024 general election, articles related to gender, sexuality and “culture war” debates dominated media coverage during the election period.
The report also charts the rapid growth of an organized ‘gender critical’ movement in the UK. Amnesty International has identified 51 organizations campaigning on sex and gender issues, with all but three formed since 2017.
The group warns that these movements increasingly overlap with international conservative and religious movements seeking to restrict broader bodily autonomy, including reproductive rights, access to contraception, and young people’s medical autonomy.
