For comedian and ghost hunter Roz Hernandez, laughter is more than entertainment. It’s an act of resistance
Her latest comedy tour, Roz Hernandez plays comedy at a gay barshe’s completely self-produced, crossing the US until August. It’s not a flashy, big budget event, it’s love, grit, spreadsheet labor. From booking LGBTQ+ venues to transporting your own gear, Roz does it all herself. And she does it for one reason: making strange people laugh.
Known for her podcast ghost! And fun campy YouTube Show Haunted HouseRoz blends the supernatural and personal. And while her ghost hunts often include Grindle dates and ghostly hotel rooms, her stand-up is firmly rooted in the reality and absurdity of being an American trans woman.
“I love my life. I love being me. I think my life is really stupid and ridiculous,” says Roz. “And I like to lean on it.”
Like what Ros once called a drug performer, the tour, hosted at LGBTQ+ bars across the United States, is a response to a deeply hostile political landscape for trans people. However, Roz argues that the show is about freedom, not fear. She describes the experience of being on stage as a kind of fun protest. Each show is a declaration that trans people are here, they are hilarious and are not waiting for permission.

Roz quickly points out that touring is not a strategic career move. Hollywood hadn’t called, so she wasn’t going to sit and wait. “If there’s anything I want to do, I’ll do it,” she says. And what she wanted was to joke with strange people in a space where she could feel safe doing so.
Despite years of the comedy scene, Roz knows what it’s like to be a punchline rather than offering it. Her current set sees the trance experience in a voice that is not sanitized or self-deprecated. “We’re trying to talk about being trans in an interesting and approachable way, whether it’s trans or not,” she explains. “Usually, when people are joking about trans people, that’s because they’re not trans people who are joking about them.”
Roz is also one of the feature performers in upcoming documentaries. We are Patpremiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. This film revisits the infamous Saturday Night Live 1990s character “Pat” Punchlines based entirely on gender ambiguity. It reflects the heritage of the character and what it means to today’s trust comedians.
But don’t twist it: Roz doesn’t aim to be a role model for anyone. “I love talking about sex and I’m a nasty, stupid b***h,” she laughs. Still, her visibility in stages, on-screen and haunted hotels is undoubtedly powerful.
And the fuss of her paranormal aspects is still very alive. Above ghost Roz interviewed Kritsen Stewart, TS Madison, Bob the Drag Queen, Margaret Cho, Sasha Colby and others. “You don’t have to believe in ghosts to enjoy it. It’s about stories, communities, camps.” Meanwhile. Haunted House Gives a strange lens to ghost hunting. It is often accompanied by strangers in Grindr, ghostly hotels, and some creepy events.
Roz often communicates with the dead, but she believes there is. Touring is tough, and touring as a trans woman is difficult. But she doesn’t let the show run in fear.
She’s too busy doing funny things.
