“The Department of Justice is determined to put an end to local school officials who keep parents in the dark about how sexuality and gender ideology are being pushed in the classroom,” Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon said in a statement released by the department.

The announcement did not reveal the specific books, lesson plans, or incidents that triggered the investigation. The department also stressed that investigators “have not reached a conclusion” on whether the district violated federal law.

Still, the move came as a warning shot to Illinois, a Democratic-led state with the nation’s strongest protections for LGBTQ+ students.

A spokesman for Gov. J.B. Pritzker accused the government of turning civil rights enforcement into a political weapon.

“While the Office of Civil Rights was investigating concerns of actual discrimination to ensure that all individuals are treated equally under the law, it is now focused on disrespecting the rights and humanity of the LGBTQ+ community,” the spokesperson said.
