Cara Delevingne is opening up about embracing a label she once struggled to claim.
In an interview on May 29th varietyThe actor, model and musician said she was “so happy” to now identify as a lesbian, despite always feeling uncomfortable with the label.
The conversation comes weeks after Delevingne, who is making her first foray into the music world, told a concert audience, “In case you didn’t know it yet, I’m a lesbian,” sparking an online debate due to her past relationships with men.
Of this reaction, she said, “People like to comment on things like that, like, ‘She’s not gay, she’s pan,’ and ‘She had a boyfriend,’ and…yes, me too, but at this point in my life, I’m very happy to be able to say that I’m a lesbian.”
Delevingne said she had “always hated labels” but explained that her relationship with British singer-songwriter Minke helped her better understand what she wanted for her future. “I don’t plan on being with anyone else for the rest of my life, and I want to start a family with this woman,” she said. “Yes, I am a very proud lesbian.”
The star also reflected on the role that internalized homophobia played in her relationship with the word “lesbian.” “My own internalized homophobia was something I didn’t really want to say or acknowledge,” she shared, adding that seeing young LGBTQ+ people embrace and be proud of their identities helped change her perspective.
Elsewhere in the interview, Delevingne spoke warmly about her partner Minke, describing her as her “biggest champion.” The two first met when they attended boarding school together in England as teenagers, but Delevingne said she admired Minke long before they met again at an Alanis Morissette concert more than a decade later and became partners in 2022.
