A Black transgender woman from Detroit said she was discriminated against and denied service at a popular LGBTQ bar in Ferndale, Michigan.

on TikTok video In an April 15th post, Lauren, who goes by @gmoprincess, said that on April 14th, around 6pm, she was trying to buy a drink in Soho when a dispute over ID escalated.

“I was profiled in a white gay bar in Ferndale, Michigan,” Lauren said in the video. “I went [to Soho] I’ve experienced this many times before and have never had any real problems. ”

But this time, Lauren said the bartender, whom she described as a “butch cis white lesbian,” seemed “cold and unwelcoming” when she walked in.

As reported, detroit metro timesLauren said she handed her state ID to the bartender to order a mimosa, but the bartender checked her with a black light and was told it wouldn’t be accepted. Michigan’s REAL ID-compliant state IDs and driver’s licenses include security features that only appear under UV light to prevent forgery.

In the TikTok video, Lauren said she was confused when the bartender refused to take her ID, saying it was valid and had been used recently at another bar without any issues. She asked to speak to the manager.

“At this point she [an] “I could hear it in her voice, the way she spoke to me, her body language,” Lauren said of the bartender.

Despite the bartender making her feel “extremely anxious” and “literally shaking,” Lauren waited for her manager amid mounting tension.

“She kept walking on the bar. You could literally see the tops of the whites of her eyes,” Lauren said. She eventually confronted the bartender, asking, “Are you being racist? Because this feels like discrimination.”

The bartender got defensive and started yelling at her, claiming that it was impossible to discriminate because she was a lesbian and Soho was a gay bar.

“I explained to her, ‘Do you think white people aren’t racist? Do you think gay people aren’t transphobic?'” Lauren said. “Then she responded and ironically used that word to accuse me of being a ‘cisphobe.’ At that point I started laughing.”

The bartender asked Laura to leave and threatened to call the police. She also complained to other patrons, described as older cisgender gay men, who began “cornering” Lauren and telling her to leave.

On the second TikTok videoLauren said she later returned with her manager and a friendly transgender black male friend to discuss what had happened. She said the manager described the incident as a misunderstanding, claiming the bartender could not see her state ID but could recognize her driver’s license.

Lauren said the manager apologized and offered her a free drink. However, the bartender never apologized or acknowledged what happened, even though he served Lauren later that night.

Later, Lauren said she found Google reviews and Reddit posts by people who claimed they had similar issues with Soho and the bartender.

“The way I see it, they don’t actually care about a safe place,” Lauren said of the bar staff. “They don’t really care that the patrons who come here are trans or black. There seems to be abuse in this bar against certain demographics, especially black and trans people.”

Lauren later said: detroit metro times She said she was skeptical about the bars’ explanations because the reasons they gave for refusing her service kept changing.

“There were inconsistencies in their statements,” she noted. “Initially, it was an issue with the hologram. Then the bartender said it was invalid, then she said my ID was fake. … She kept changing the reason. Then the manager said the problem was that it was a state ID, not a driver’s license.”

Lauren said she received a REAL ID-compliant state ID (which includes her birth name but must identify her gender as female) last year and hasn’t encountered a similar problem.

She told the newspaper she is considering filing a complaint with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights.

“It wasn’t my intention to cause a scene or anything like that. It was mainly to express my consciousness. Before this experience, I loved going to Soho. I loved going to Ferndale,” Lauren said.

Soho did not respond to inquiries from authorities. metro times As for whether the bartender still works at the bar. However, it issued a statement to the newspaper outlining its side of the story.

“Recently, an interaction between a member of our staff and a patron escalated in a way that should not have happened,” the bar said in a statement. “This situation began with a request for age verification, something we are legally required to do and take seriously. However, the way the interaction was handled did not meet our standards. Inappropriate comments were made and patrons were not treated with the professionalism, respect, and consideration that deserves everyone in our space.”

Soho noted that the bar’s manager had apologized to Lauren and said it was “addressing this matter” with its team and “reinforcing expectations around respectful communication, de-escalation, ID verification, and the responsibility each staff member has to maintain a safe and welcoming environment.”

The statement continued, “We do not tolerate discrimination, harassment, or disrespect towards any patron, including transgender patrons, patrons of color, or anyone who comes through our doors….We are now focused on accountability, clarity, and ensuring our actions are consistent with the values this community has long expected of us.”
