The Sun moves into sidereal Cancer, your natural home of home, family, and deep emotions, on Thursday, July 16th. This is a sign of healing that comes from a mother, a hearth, and belonging somewhere.
But this year, something we’ve never seen before will happen. The Sun is stepping into the house already occupied by exalted Jupiter.
Jupiter has been in Cancer since early June, sitting in the single most powerful sign in the zodiac. As the sun continues on July 16, the two great illuminators of the sky will share the same home. Atman and Guru are aligned in the Guru’s own constellation. It’s a rare kind of blessing.
This is also the beginning of Dakshinayana, a six-month period when the sun moves south of the equator, the days become shorter, and the emphasis of life shifts from outer accomplishments to inner cultivation. In Vedic tradition, this period is considered more auspicious for spiritual practices than for new ventures. It’s guru season. This Cancer Sun alignment with exalted Jupiter is a signal that the sky doesn’t send out often.
Punarvasu Sun (Cancer 0-3.20): July 16th-20th
Punarvasu means “return of light” or “becoming good again”. The Sun passes through these starting degrees of Cancer during the first four days of its transit. When Jupiter is nearby, there is a sense of returning to the essentials: relationships, practice, and a sense of home within yourself. It’s a good opportunity to renew what’s important to you.
Sun in Pusha (Cancer 3.20-16.40): July 20 – August 3
Pusha is ruled by Brihaspati, the priest of the gods, who is of the same energy as Jupiter himself. For the Sun to pass through Pushya while Jupiter is already present, the Guru principle must be amplified to the maximum. Brihaspati bestows good fortune, fortune and love of spiritual teachings. God blesses children and those who give generously.
But the sun does not work best in Pusha. This is a Nakshatra ruled by Saturn, and when the Sun transits through it, you risk getting caught up in material concerns and losing sight of your larger spiritual mission. Use this as a reminder to return to your practice, meditation, and deeper purpose.
July 23rd brings welcome news. Mercury station goes direct, ending the retrograde phase that began on June 29th. The fog and misunderstandings begin to clear. It will take a few days for things to fully settle down, but the direction has changed.
July 29th is the peak of the moon. In the Pusha Nakshatra, the Sun and Jupiter are in exact conjunction, creating what tradition calls Guru Pusha Yoga. This is considered one of the most auspicious days of the year, a day when the teacher’s blessings and the light of consciousness arrive at the same time. Spend time in prayer, with your guru, or in study. What you start and offer that day carries special weight.
Ashleesha Sun (Cancer 16:40-29:59): August 3rd-16th
Ashlesha is ruled by the Nagas, serpent beings from Vedic mythology, and is associated with the god Vishnu. This nakshatra conveys deep occult wisdom and can bring deep spiritual experiences during its passage to those who accept it. The Mercury rule in this sign provides intellectual depth, such as the nature of karma, how time works, and the purpose of what we carry. Please stay close to your teacher during this part.
Gandanta (August 14th to 16th)
The last day of the transit passes through Cancer Gandanta, the zone between 27 degrees and 30 degrees Cancer, at the junction of Water and Fire. This is where old emotional patterns that have been building up over the past month can surface in a strained rush. Deep unconscious material regrets or long-standing regrets can feel overwhelming. But remember: You have the power of free will to move into a new light in this moment. You don’t have to live in the shadow of your past or your mistakes. Please let them go. They seem intertwined and difficult to deal with, but you are strong enough to overcome them.
by rising sign
For rheorising: Cancer is your 12th house, so this transit turns your attention inward – spending, subconscious processing, and withdrawal. Traveling abroad can be unexpectedly rewarding. This month is a great month for inner work and meditation.
For Pisces Rising: Cancer is your fifth house, where spiritual practices and initiations come to fruition. This is one of the best solar transits for you this year.
For Scorpio Rising: Cancer is the 9th house of gurus and higher teachings. Guru Pusha Yoga on July 29th has a special meaning.
Transits are 20% of timing, and it all depends on the larger cycle you’re running. A consultation would be helpful for guidance on how this transit interacts with your personal chart and dasha.
