saturn doesn’t whisper
There is a poem I wrote several years ago. Signs of life as seen from the astrological zodiac. It begins with “Saturn sits in the heavens and casts Mayan lightning.” The point of the poem called magician’s sleevethat is, Saturn is the great illusionist of the sky. He convinces us that we are not safe and unsupported when we are alone with rent and bills and rumors. He stages a melodrama in our heads and invites us to believe it. The spiritual teaching of this poem is a request to look up his sleeve. To laugh at illusions. Jumping off a cliff into the ever-present web of God.
I’m thinking about that poem again because Saturn’s stations go retrograde on July 27th and where he stops is unusually rich. Calculated in Lahiri Ayanamsa using JPL DE440, Saturn stops at 20 degrees 10 minutes of sidereal Pisces in the early part of Revati Nakshatra. He then goes retrograde for four and a half months, deep into Uttara Bhadrapada at 13 degrees 20 minutes of Pisces, turning straight on December 11th. The entire retrograde arc is in the slow waters of Pisces. The entire arc takes place in the most spiritual part of the zodiac.
What does Saturn retrograde actually do?
When Saturn moves forward, his work is outward. He builds houses, sets deadlines, sends invoices, gives or withholds promotions, and enforces results. When Saturn goes retrograde, the work moves inward. The same lessons about discipline, structure, and responsibility are rerouted to our inner lives. What was avoidable becomes even more difficult to avoid. What had been projected outward begins to be felt directly. Saturn’s pressure does not diminish during retrograde. they move.
In Pisces, this inward direction is further amplified. Pisces is the ocean, the dissolution, the place where the boundaries between self and non-self soften. Practicing Saturn’s discipline through Pisces requires bringing structure to your inner ocean rather than your outer house. It is a call to meditative discipline. To meditation. To sit with what emerges when the noise stops. Eat well and sleep well as a sacred practice, not as a performance indicator. Saturn in Pisces rewards those who treat their bodies as temples and punishes those who treat them as vending machines.
Two nakshatras that are retrograde
Revati, the nakshatra where Saturn is stationed, is the last nakshatra of the zodiac. Its symbol is a fish or a drum, and its atmosphere is one of completion, safe arrival, and the soul reaching distant shores. Saturn asks here: What is truly over in your life, and what are you still holding on to as if it’s not over yet? The grace of Revati is the grace of liberation, the grace of letting go of what has already been paid.
By December, Saturn has retraced its steps all the way back to Uttara Bhadrapada, the nakshatra of the great cosmic warrior, the patient. Uttara Bhadrapada is famous in our tradition for producing people who are patient, persevering, and deep seekers. Its presiding deity is Ahir Budnya, the deep sea serpent. Saturn retrograde in this area means we are invited to do even more serious inner work than we have been doing thus far. A deep diver who doesn’t look into the deep ocean for himself is just a swimmer.
Maya created by Saturn
Now, let’s get back to the poem. the deepest gift signs of life That is the argument that Saturn is basically not an enemy. He is a teacher who specializes in creating the exact illusions we need to see through. A mother whose love we always doubted. A father who was never satisfied. A career setback that came just as it was starting to take off. The diagnosis that brought us back to our bodies. Each of them is a lightning bolt dropped from a ringed giant, and each of them is a sleeve that looks up.
During the four and a half months of this retrograde, expect your sleeves to be more defined than usual. The fear you’ve been dealing with at arm’s length may be coming even closer. The pattern you rationalized may no longer allow for that rationalization. People with strong Saturn placements in their charts, especially those in water signs, will feel this most directly. This is not the season to show your strength. It’s the season to look honestly.
4 months of practical guidance
- First of all, the body. Saturn in Pisces and the body are connected through the feet, lymphatic system, and immune system. Sleep, hydration, gentle movement, and clean food are not luxuries this season. Skip them and Saturn will push.
- Start with one small discipline. Retrogrades are the perfect time to start a meditative practice that you can actually stick with. A 5 minute meditation you do every morning is better than a 45 minute meditation you do twice a week and give up.
- Finish what can be finished. Revati at the station will ask you to close the completed loop. Cancel subscriptions that you no longer use. I will send you an apology email. Submit your documents. Let’s finish what’s finished.
- See one horror first hand. Choose the smallest one. Leave it there for 10 minutes without trying to fix it or run away. Saturn rewards those who look.
- Don’t force results. Just before the station, the opposition of Jupiter and Pluto around July 20th will tempt grand gestures. Saturn retrograde responds to grand gestures with quiet failures. Patience wins this season.
long horizon
When Saturn turns direct again on December 11th, it will be around 13 degrees Pisces, almost returning to its early summer state. From the outside, it looks as if nothing happened. Internally, if we had used the last few months well, we could have made a big difference. The fear will be less. Your body will become clean. Practice gets old. Illusion will lose some of its control. This is how Saturn works. Progress had been silent, then suddenly became apparent.
For those who want to study the deeper structure of Saturn and other slow planets in their charts, including how its nakshatras shape the karmic terrain, the foundational work will be done in the live Modern Fundamentals of Vedic Astrology course starting on Wednesday, July 8th.
