Mercury Comes Home: From Cancer to Gemini Through the Retrograde

Mercury enters the sidereal sign of Cancer on June 23rd and almost immediately stops retrograde on June 29th. From there, it leaves Cancer and crosses into Gemini around July 7th. It will remain retrograde in Gemini until July 23rd, then turn direct and stay in Gemini until early August, returning to Cancer on August 6th. This is an unusual six-week trip for Mercury, with two different flavors stacked back to back.

If you are ruled by Gemini, Virgo rising, or the Moon, Mercury is your Ascendant Lord and you will feel this entire window personally. For others, this mode of transportation forms the structure of communication, family, work, and short-form thinking from late June to early August.

Mercury in Cancer: An uncomfortable home of the mind

Mercury considers the Moon as an enemy, and the Moon is the owner of Cancer. Mercury, the planet of intellect, does not like to be active in the watery, emotional, security-oriented sign of the Moon. The intellect feels cramped, restless, easily nervous, more likely to give unwarranted compliments than honest words, prone to nervous disorders, more reactive to family topics.

Cancer’s legs are short this year. Mercury will enter Cancer on June 23rd and go retrograde on June 29th, so it will only be directly in Cancer for 6 days. Use these six days to finish any unfinished business related to your family or home. Please write an email to your mother. Cancel the subscription you were trying to cancel. End the conversation about home repairs. Mercury in Cancer can complete those tasks. Mercury retrograde in Cancer will turn them into a vortex of unresolved emotional material until Mercury returns to Gemini once again.

Return to Gemini: Finally to Mercury Home

When Mercury turns retrograde from Cancer and returns to Gemini around July 7th, it will return to its home. This is a rest area in Retrograde. Mercury in Gemini is quick, curious, communicative, and calm. Despite being retrograde, Gemini is a kind-hearted zone. Information that seemed foggy in late June is starting to emerge. Ideas that were stuck in emotional weather suddenly have language.

This is a beautiful window for reading, writing, journaling, or quietly studying. Textbooks that were left unattended for the first time in February may come off the shelves. You might suddenly find the right words for a conversation you needed to have with a sibling or close friend. Create notes. Get instant insights. Retrograde Gemini is full of clarity, but that clarity is impressive, and what feels obvious today may be only half of a larger picture that will only be visible when Mercury’s station goes direct on July 23rd.

The water is clear. Mercury begins its forward motion in its own sign, then spends another two weeks in Gemini, before re-entering Cancer on August 6th. This is a powerful communication and learning window. Those who are running a Mercury major period or sub-period should especially feel a lift.

Mercury re-enters Cancer August 6th Direct

After a long visit to Gemini, Mercury returns to Cancer on August 6th, with forward motion and a more subdued tone than in late June. The emotional and family content that surfaced during the retrograde now has room to be followed up more quietly and honestly. This is not a window to re-litigate old disputes. This is a window for bringing integration back home.

Working in this 6 week window

For the Ascension and Moon in Gemini and Virgo, the entire journey is personal. Pay attention to which houses Cancer and Gemini occupy in your chart. This is because the lord of the chart passes through these houses twice, once forward and backward. The themes of those homes are thoroughly revisited.

As Cancer rises, Mercury will transit through the 1st and last of the 12th, potentially amplifying the spiritual aspects of the retrograde. Extra meditation and clean speech are especially helpful.

For everyone, the habits are the same as always during Mercury Retrograde, with a Cancer and Gemini twist. Listen more than you talk. Back up your device. Confirm receipt of important messages.
