In a world where plus size visibility is too often diminished for those in front of the camera, the Curvy Boss Spotlight exists to widen the lens.

This series celebrates the dynamic, talented, and bold plus-size professionals who are moving, shaking, and making a difference across industries. Founder. Executive. stylist. Educator. Creative. Change agent.

Because representation isn’t just about being seen in a campaign. It’s about seeing yourself as a leader.

We often say that because it is true; We cannot be what we cannot see.

And this week’s spotlight is a reminder of exactly why this series is important.

When you think of Atlanta fashion and entertainment, there’s one name that carries weight, history, and undeniable influence. My name is Paula Whittle..

Honestly, I feel like the word “pioneer” is too small.

For about 20 years, atlanta international fashion week Founder Paula Whittle has done what true visionaries do, built something that didn’t exist yet, and inspired others to imagine even bigger with what she’s accomplished.

Long before Atlanta’s fashion ecosystem achieved the global credibility it enjoys today, Paula was invested in the idea that the city could become a legitimate international fashion destination. Not wishfully. actually.

She wasn’t waiting for an invitation to fashion history.

She was writing her own chapter.

With over 350 shows produced, over 500 designers participating, fashion from 19 countries on display, and nearly 20 years of cultural influence associated with her name, Paula Whittle has built much more than just an event.

She built an organization.

And like many women who create a legacy, she started with something far quieter than acclaim.

She started with a vision.

A vision bigger than fashion, a mission bigger than business

When Paula talks about how this journey began, she doesn’t start with ambition.

She starts with purpose.

“God has given me the vision to provide a platform to aspiring talent and mentor the next generation of trendsetters.”

The answer tells you just about everything you need to know about how she moves.

Because for Paula, fashion was never just about presentation.

It was about the platform.

That distinction is important.

Platforms lift people up. Platforms create access. Platforms outlive trends.

and through it Atlanta International Fashion Week, Paula built something that does all three.

What stands out about her story is that much of her leadership is rooted in creating opportunity rather than chasing fame. Atlanta International Fashion Week was never intended to be a spectacle for the sake of spectacle. It has become a connector between emerging talent and global exposure, between Atlanta’s creative pulse and the international fashion conversation.

That’s how ecosystems work.

And Paula has been practicing it since before many people had the language to express it.

Her daily rhythm reflects that grounding.

prayer.

meditation.

meeting.

suggestion.

strategy.

But underneath it all there is something deeper.

On the phone.

as she says, “I own that space by being who God has told me to be: living a responsible, purpose-driven life.”

It’s not brand language. That is belief.

Perhaps that’s why her influence feels so layered.

It was never just made to impress…it was made to endure.

Build what didn’t exist and be the guide others need

One of the most moving things Paula says in this interview is when she talks about representation.

Because instead of discussing visibility, she talks about guidance.

“Representation means having a guide. In this industry, I didn’t have a guide. Just me and God. He is my guide and my spokesperson.”

Phew! There are many things in it. Especially for those who have had to build without precedent.

without guidance. No roadmap. Without seeing my own reflection in the room.

Paula knows the experience well. And perhaps because she came without a guide, she became one. That may be one of the strongest elements of her legacy.

It’s not just that she created Fashion Week; But she has used that platform to mentor hundreds.

Launch your career. Please open the door. Create a passageway.

through her nonprofit organization. fashion apprenticePaula has spent years investing in young girls interested in fashion, helping them discover their potential when they once saw only their limitations. She has brought dignity and consideration to underserved and homeless communities through her Beauty & A Makeover initiative.

That work is inseparable from her fashion work.

It is its soul.

Paula says, “We make sure they feel seen inside and out.” She’s talking about beauty, yes.

But she also talks about values.

It was always part of her blueprint.

It’s not just about fashion.

Elevate people.

And that may be why so many in Atlanta see her as a community builder, not just an event producer.

they are not the same thing.

And Paula has always practiced the latter.

From paralysis to power, how faith shaped Paula Whittle’s resilience

There is a point in Paula’s story when the admiration becomes something else.

Something deeper.

Because while building all of this, she also overcame an autoimmune disease and severe spinal complications, went from paralysis to a wheelchair and back to walking again.

Most people would have thought survival was enough.

Paula continued building.

“I had some medical issues that hindered my work performance, but by relying on my faith and strength in God, I went from being paralyzed to walking from a wheelchair.”

Please read it slowly.

Because it changes the way we read everything that came before it.

Every honor. Any event. Every milestone.

They carry a different weight now. Because they are not easily constructed. They were built through pain. And somehow, through it all, she remained expansive.

Positive. Generative.

Such resilience cannot be created…it is alive. And in Paula’s case, it seems inseparable from her faith.

Faith is not an abstract thing. Faith as fuel.

There is something deeply moving about a woman who continued to expand her horizons even though she felt the limitations of her body.

That is power. Quiet, disciplined, spiritual power.

And it’s transmitted to everything she touches.

“Set the trend, be the look.” Paula Whittle on confidence, style and self-definition

When we asked Paula about confidence, she went inward before going outward.

“Confidence comes first in God. Once you understand who and what you are, you can own it. Inner beauty oozes outward. That’s true beauty.”

The answer feels like a philosophy of life.

It’s not about performance.

It’s not an image.

Identity.

And perhaps that’s why her style advice is so compelling.

Because they have the same self-ownership.

“Own your style. Own your identity. Set the trend. Be the look.”

Honestly?

It deserves to be framed.

Because what she’s really saying is, don’t chase permission.

Create your own author.

Honestly, this describes her career.

Paula Whittle didn’t follow a fashion blueprint.

She was left alone.

Purpose over popularity, why Paula Whittle leads by phone rather than influence

There’s a lot of noise right now when it comes to ambition.

Hustle myth.

Obsession with visualization.

Performance disguised as leadership.

Paula cuts it all out.

When asked what advice she would give to someone boldly taking steps towards their goals, she replied:

“Find your purpose. Own it. Study it. Seek wisdom. Be an expert at it. Let God guide you.”

That is the wisdom of an adult woman.

Experienced wisdom.

And it feels fresh because it’s not influenced by trends.

That’s true.

When Paula talks about leadership, she doesn’t mean chasing influence.

Managers only.

And perhaps that’s why her legacy has lasted nearly 20 years.

Because purpose outlives the hype.

every time.

Build a legacy by helping others win

My favorite answer in the entire interview came from a simple question.

How do you celebrate your victories?

Paula replied:

“Help others win.”

That’s not a throwaway line.

That’s the philosophy.

And perhaps the clearest expression of what makes Paula Whittle so extraordinary.

She never treated success as a possession.

She treats it as a cycle.

To increase.

To share.

That’s legacy thinking.

And that’s rare.

Looking ahead to global expansion and the 19th anniversary of Atlanta International Fashion Week this September, it feels clear that Paula is not slowing down.

She’s still building.

Still teaching.

Still expanding.

I’m still making things pop and shake.

We created this series in honor of just such a Curvy Boss.

Why Paula Whittle’s story matters now

Because stories like Paula’s remind us that leadership doesn’t just take on one form.

Sometimes it looks like faith.

Sometimes it looks like survival.

Sometimes it seems to create institutions that no one could have imagined.

And sometimes it looks like helping others win.

Paula Whittle did all of the above.

In doing so, she has created more than fashion week.

She produced evidence.

Proof that plus-size professionals are in charge.

Prove that purpose can build a legacy.

Proof that one woman’s vision can change a city.

That’s the energy of Curvy Boss.

And it’s worth noting.
