Some nights I just want to stop and soak it all in.
The BET Awards weekend kicked off with a beautifully curated evening honoring legendary music executive Sylvia Rhone. Organized by Mon Ami Productions and Mona Scott-Young, and supported by Black Music Collective, the evening was a love letter to black music, culture, and the women who have shaped it.
Some of you may not know, but Sylvia Rhone is one of the most powerful and pioneering executives in the history of the music industry. As president of Epic Records, she has championed some of the biggest names in music, from Beyoncé to Travis Scott. Rhone, a graduate of the Wharton Business School, was named CEO of EastWest Records in 1994, becoming the first Black woman to head a major record label. This was a milestone that paved the way for generations of black women in the music industry. Her decades of contributions to culture are truly historic, and a night to honor her has been long awaited.

The night featured a statement from none other than Missy Elliott, who credited her music career to Sylvia Rhone. Apparently Missy wanted to have her own label, but Rhone encouraged Missy to give her just one album, which resulted in five. The world is truly grateful to Sylvia Rhone!
Performances by Stevie Wonder, Josey, and Terrell Music kept the night moving. And yes, when Stevie Wonder took the stage, the room felt every note (even though he said he didn’t feel like singing).
For this occasion, I wore a red leather trench coat. artea minkstyled with Norma Kamali shorts, red stockings, and Steve Madden heels, the red-hot moment seems fitting for this special night. Make-up is Latrice Johnsonhair was styled by Kalief W using Kendras Boutique Hair.

Nights like this remind us why we do what we do. This BET Awards weekend features Sylvia Rhone, black music, and more magic. 💣
