TTRPG for accessible gaming Starting today, 318 games from 139 community creators will be supported with donations of $10 or more. DOTS RPG Project and Signature Braille RPG Dice. These dice are designed to make it easier for people with disabilities to play tabletop role-playing games.
In the TTRPG industry, physical dice are plentiful for the sighted but often scarce and unaffordable for the blind. Digital dice rollers are an option, but they lack the tactile experience and immersion of rolling physical dice. Sighted players themselves acknowledge the unique satisfaction of rolling traditional dice.
“Giving visually impaired gamers the opportunity to roll their own dice is what inspired us to create the DOTS RPG project,” said Executive Director Jess Dempsey. “There’s nothing like a game-changing roll of the dice in a tense situation. Some of the best moments are when time seems to stand still for a few seconds as you wait for the dice to settle and determine success or failure. The ability to roll your own dice and share your results with your peers has been available to many for a long time. Not everyone has the same level of access, and we’re working to close that gap.”
Most mass-produced polyhedral dice available for purchase online or in brick-and-mortar stores have some sort of number printed or lightly inscribed on the smooth surface, which is why people who are blind, partially sighted, or have other visual impairments often have a hard time finding dice they can use.
DOTS RPG Project’s Signature Braille RPG Dice are designed with the blind and visually impaired experience in mind, with a single Braille cell on every die, no engraved numbers and an emphasis on tactile readability. With a simplified numbering system using the Braille letters AJ for 1-10 and KT for 11-20, and a unique Touch Point Edge design for directional indication, the dice are easy to read for those familiar with Braille and easy for anyone to learn.
The DOTS Braille RPG Dice Set allows blind players to roll dice very similarly to their sighted friends, with some slight differences: for the D10 and D%, both are marked 1-0, and one die has a rounded tip to help differentiate when rolling percentiles. The d20 is roughly twice the size of a standard D20, while the other dice are only slightly larger than standard, making the set just as easy to handle and convenient to roll as any numbered set.
In 2018, the DOTS RPG project Die Hard Dice The epic mass production adventure begins. After years of countless prototypes, real-world testing, and design iterations, DOTS is on the verge of bringing their Signature Braille RPG Dice to life. Funds raised from the TTRPGs for Accessible Gaming Charity Bundle will help fund the production of acrylic and metal dice, making the first Braille RPG Dice available in retail stores around the world, making tabletop gaming more accessible to gamers who are visually impaired and sparking a positive discussion about disability access in the TTRPG community.
The dice are available in acrylic “Molten Bronze,” metallic bronze with pearlescent dark bronze swirls, and hollow metal dice “Silver Ingot,” a silver metal with a translucent black antique finish. DOTS Hope We plan to add more colors if we exceed our initial funding goal. The minimum price for a bundle is $10, but larger donations are welcome. Once funded, the dice will be available for purchase on the Die Hard Dice web store.
The bundle in support of this funding goal launched today and will offer over 300 TTRPGs, TTRPG supplements, and art packs valued at $981 for donations of $10 or more to support the DOTS RPG Project. The bundle will accept donations until October 20th, with a funding goal of $20,000, which will cover the initial production costs of the DOTS RPG Project Signature Braille RPG Dice and then become self-sustaining.
