Teenager Ari Ackerman loves the Washington, D.C., punk scene and is trying hard to overcome the ever-imminent death (and frequent resurrection) of her cancer-stricken father. Ali’s best friend Maya Meng just wants to hang out and watch Jawbox play at Black Cat. But sadly, a perfectly good day can be ruined by a series of escalating unexplained deaths…
“I grew up in the ’90s and went to see bands like Fugazi, Jawbox, and Monorchid perform in small venues scattered around the Washington, D.C., area,” Martz said. “When I started writing, Ghost arm made of angry ghostsAt that time, I wanted it to be a love letter to that place. But as I continued writing, the book became more and more bizarre. And ironically, the stranger the story became, the more personal and emotionally honest it became. ”
“Once Oliver introduced me to the characters, I immediately felt a strong connection to them,” Diotto said. “I realized there were a lot of similarities between Ali, Maya, Sona and I: being outcasts and long-time fans of punk bands. And as we worked on this book, those connections got even stronger, and the book got even weirder. It’s not every day you see a bowl of soup talking or a giant head living in a hut!”
