Life is full of ups and downs, and sometimes unexpected events. It’s hard to deal with situations that don’t go well, don’t go as planned, that make you lose your cool and question your abilities. At the end of the day, we all want things to work out and emerge as “winners”. But in life, we’ll always face difficulties and nothing is under our control. We shouldn’t try either. The difference is not what happens to you, but what you do with what happens to you. Here are two simple strategies you can use to always win and never miss an opportunity again.
1. Focus on your strengths
Unfortunately, we are a collection of contradictions. Sometimes joyful, sometimes gloomy. Sometimes optimistic, sometimes gloomy. Sometimes immature, sometimes very intelligent. We also have many shortcomings that affect what and how we do things, but we often focus on our shortcomings rather than our strengths. Strengths are the things you are consistently good at, the things you are innately equipped to do well, and the things you naturally like to do. Skills in solving complex problems, empathy for others, vivid imagination, and the ability to make the perfect omelette are just a few examples. It makes perfect sense to focus on your strengths instead of your weaknesses. If you focus on and use your strengths, you are sure to get results and even minimize the negative effects that your shortcomings may have. When we see what we are not good at, we feel terrible about ourselves and our abilities. In contrast, when we see what we are good at, we feel proud and satisfied with ourselves.
2. Prepare in advance.
Sure, sometimes you work on something, you do it well, and you get the results you want (often when you play to your strengths). But sometimes you fumble, you do it ad-hoc, and you don’t get the results you want. You’re much more likely to achieve the opportunities and problems you face if you set yourself up for success up front. So what exactly do you want to happen? What solution, outcome, or result would be ideal? Get clear on what you want the outcome to be from your current situation, and how it would make you feel when you get it. Start by breaking it down and ask yourself what you can do to set the stage for the results you want. What do you need to put into place? What will facilitate the achievement of your goal? What are you ready to commit to to ensure maximum results? Start small, set achievable goals, and work your way up to bigger tasks.
