(That’s a photo from my 14 year old. I tried to find one of my when I was 12, but most of them were cut out into small sizes and shapes from the photo album!)
When I was 12, my parents let me start something that changed my life in a way that I am still very grateful for today.
What was that? They let me start paying for many of my own expenses, such as clothes, gifts, personal expenses.
I think it was one of the best gifts they gave me. Because they challenged themselves to learn to grow as much money as possible and motivated them to think outside the box. For example, I found that rather than spending $60-80 at a retail store, I could buy it frequently at the Thrift Store for $12-20 (dollar days).
When it comes to money, the habit of thinking outside the box has laid the foundation for years of creative savings and wise spending. And is that the way of thinking “understanding it”? Our family has saved thousands of dollars over the years!
He also encouraged people to find ways to earn their own income from a young age. At age 14, I began teaching violin lessons. When I was 15, I was a waitress in my local tea room. by16, I worked as a violin lesson, a waitress, babysitter and a helper for my mother.
I loved the challenge of learning to juggle many different things. I loved buying things with the sense of fulfillment I brought with my money. And I discovered how I was an entrepreneur.
Looking back, I am very grateful that my parents have made me pay for so much of my own. I tried to be resourceful, looking for opportunities, and building experiences and skills that have helped me so much into adulthood.
