From merlot and mahogany to bordeaux and burgundy, the wide range of deep red designer bags that have surged in popularity for the fall 2024 season are a worthy addition to your carefully curated collection of fashionable purses.
Far from being a passing trend, a dark red handbag showcases the versatility of a neutral carrier and its ability to instantly level up both a simple, stunning black dress and a cool, casual denim-on-denim ensemble. A timeless classic. The proof was on the fall 2024 runways. Chanel showed off a rich red quilted leather chain purse, paired with a pastel cotton candy skirt suit for the day and a black leather jumpsuit for the evening. Ferragamo and Dries Van Noten expertly styled dark bags with red-based outfits. Louis Vuitton’s ruby red box bag, complete with black furry mittens, added the perfect pop of color to an all-black fashion drama outfit. And Coach debuted a new Times Square Tabby merlot-colored bag adorned with playful New York-themed charms. The model wore an oversized pink ribbon sweater and layered a black hoodie underneath, creating a refreshing, youthful, refreshing and cool finish.
Following this resurgence of designer dark red bags, several major fashion designers have embraced various shades of deep red over the past few seasons. Nadège Vany-Cybulski began incorporating rich reds into her Hermès collections in fall 2022, and these rich reds then colored nearly half of the looks in the brand’s spring 2024 collection, with an even darker, sexier look for the fall collection. The oxblood hue continued. Of course, the storied French fashion house is no stranger to red. The brand debuted Rouge H in 1925, a sophisticated burgundy color that eventually became the coveted colorway of the Kelly and Birkin bag styles (some of which were introduced in 1954). While several designers’ collections have featured burgundy-red for spring 2024, Sabato de Sarno’s first collection as Gucci’s creative director features a hue synonymous with the Italian fashion brand’s era: the burgundy red. “Rosso Ancora”, inspired by the red elevator of “The Savoy”, has debuted. While working as a porter at a London hotel, the young Guccio admired the high fashion and leather goods of the wealthy clientele, which inspired his own brand. De Sarno’s fall 2024 collection featured monochromatic Rosso Ancora looks and matching handbags, while also showcasing a signature red hue alongside separates in earthy browns, olive greens, and pastel blues. This deep red hue is now a household name, but the deep red patent leather that appeared in Tom Ford’s fall 1995 Gucci collection ushered in a new golden age for the then-dormant Italian fashion label. Some may find it reminiscent of bags and shoes.
Combining dark red designer bags and fashion with a ’70s color palette has been a hallmark of Mathieu Blazy’s Bottega Veneta since its fall 2022 debut collection. This season, Bottega Veneta introduced a rich red croc-embossed envelope clutch that stood out against white and cream outerwear, but this is Blasey’s first Bottega Veneta, which elevates the casual concept of a simple white tank. An unforgettable leather look with a top, blue jeans and a burgundy Calimero bag slung over the model’s shoulder. It harkens back to another important moment in the fashion label’s history, when Lauren Hutton famously carried a deep red Bottega Veneta intrecciato-woven leather clutch in the 1980s film “American Gigolo.” Hutton will once again carry the beloved wallet at Bottega Veneta’s Spring 2017 show, which celebrated its 50th anniversary.
Whether made from lambskin, suede, patent leather, or pebbled leather, these dark berry beauties will make your handbag look even more expensive and elegant compared to boring black. It also ages like fine wine.
