A new report from the GMB Coalition has revealed that women of color working in parliament earn around £6,000 less than white men, revealing a deep pay gap at the heart of British power.
The study found that ethnic minority staff earn an average of £2,000 less than their white colleagues, while women of color face the most severe inequalities. While Congress publicly celebrates diversity, its own staff tell a different story.
Activists say this is evidence of unequal representation. Diversity goals look good on paper, but without pay transparency, independent audits, and accountability, real progress stalls. “They love our ideas and our energy, but they don’t love us enough to pay us equally,” one civil servant told Pride.
The GMB union is now calling on Parliament to publish a full equality audit and take action to close the gap. But this is not just a Westminster problem, and reflects how black women across all industries continue to be underpaid and undervalued.
As the theme of Black History Month reminds us, being strong and proud means knowing and claiming your worth.
