A different world returns to Hillman College as new classes step onto campus and loved ones return. At the center is Deborah Wayne (Malea Joy Moon), Whitley and Dwayne’s loving and protected youngest daughter, a free spirit with a talent for the spotlight and a big heart who is still finding her way at Hillman.
In the process, she will be joined by a new generation that reflects the breadth of Black life on campus. Shaquille Johnson (Cornell Young IV), a five-star athlete who chose Legacy; Amir Rodale (Jordan Aaron Hall) is a bright psychology major who is better at solving other people’s problems than facing his own. Hazel Henry (Kennedy Reese) is a church-raised small-town girl defining her own values. And Ghanaian-Nigerian fashion entrepreneur Kojo Achebe (Chibuikem Uche) is finding the courage to follow his vision. Legacy favorites also return, including Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy), Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison), Freddie Brooks (Cree Summer), and Ron Johnson (Daryl M. Bell).
In contrast to the rituals, humor, and nuances of HBCUs, A Different World is a hopeful drama, rich in heart and unapologetically centered on the richness and complexity of the Black experience.
