Carl Franklin’s thriller is underrated. Yes, it’s over the top and generic, but it’s quite a ride. Especially for the Washington Sheriff, who has relationships with married women and ultimately engages in a sticky business. Washington enjoys the old-fashioned fun that permeates the film.

1 Malcolm X 1993
Spike and Denzel’s Magnus Opus, Washington, took a year off from other jobs and was immersed in the way civil rights leaders think. It’s more than rewarding. He captured the steel justice of political figures and his flaws and early failures. If it’s currently being made, it cleans up the Oscars, but came out when such a film was ignored by the committee. A real masterpiece.
