Let me be clear. The promotion gap is not a trust issue. It’s a matter of perception.
Many of us do that job. produce results. Take on extra responsibility. Still, progress stalls.
It’s not because I’m not ready. But because visibility and advocacy are not equal.
We are often told to “speak more.” Lean forward and be patient. But those conversations ignore something much bigger. Who is in the room when decisions are made and who is being talked about when we are not there.
That’s where careers are actually formed.
Sponsorship is more important than performance alone. That’s the difference: you have a senior in your place, someone who gives your work a name and drives your progress.
Without it, talent will be ignored. repetition.
So the approach is changing. We clearly document our results. I am directly asking questions about progress. We build relationships strategically, not just socially.
And importantly, we recognize when space for growth is not built.
Because staying in a place that underestimates you is not loyalty. That’s a limitation.
True empowerment is understanding your worth and being willing to move to a place where it is properly recognized.
Working hard is not the answer.
Work smart and be noticed.
