Every spring, the same topic of hair comes up.

Braids, twists and protective styles are back.

From knotless braids to passionate twists, salons across London say they’re already seeing an uptick in bookings as women prepare for warmer weather and holiday travel.

Protective styles work because they minimize day-to-day operations. Less combing, heat, and tension will make your hair stronger over time.

However, trichologists warn that many women still make one mistake.

Leaving the style on for too long.

“Protective styles are not permanent,” says British trichologist Annabel Kingsley. “Leaving your braids in for eight to 10 weeks can cause stress damage to your hairline.”

That tension can cause traction alopecia, especially if you have a tight style.

Experts recommend keeping most braid styles. up to 4-6 weekswhile taking care of your scalp while styling.

Using light oils, scalp sprays, and gentle cleansers can help keep the scalp under your braids healthy.

Another growing trend is light braid style.

Many stylists now have fewer hair extensions, preferring knotless braids and twists to reduce weight and tension.

The goal of a protective style should be exactly what its name suggests.

protection.

It’s not just convenient.
