Recently, my husband Kelvin and I packed up and headed to Elberton, Georgia to visit his longtime friend Mason and his beautiful family. Kelvin and Mason go way back when they met many years ago when they worked together in security at NASA in Florida. Both are military veterans and have managed to stay connected over the years despite the ups and downs in their lives.
It was great to meet Mason’s wife Scarlett and their growing family. Scarlett and Mason actually met while serving in the Marine Corps and have built a wonderful life together filled with love, adventure, and now lots of farm animals. They have five children and are expecting another beautiful boy.
What fascinated me most was their decision to leave the hustle and bustle of city life in exchange for a slower, more intentional lifestyle on their 20-acre farm. This is part of a growing trend happening across the country where families are choosing to simplify, grow their own food, raise animals and embrace a life more connected to the land.
to be honest? I can see the appeal.
The older I get, the more peaceful such a life sounds. There are no traffic jams. There is no constant noise. Just open skies, fresh air, and space to breathe. But is it okay to do it full time? That’s the question! I don’t know if I could live that far away from civilization, shopping malls, and my favorite restaurants. Will I eventually get tired of it? perhaps. Or you might surprise yourself.
While we were there, I got to meet some of the farm’s cutest residents. There were goats and lots of chickens roaming freely around the grounds without any bother, and they certainly weren’t worried about us visitors. They just went about their day, poking and exploring like they owned the place.
We also met their three friendly Great Pyrenees dogs, Gus, Otis, and another sweetheart, whose names I had no idea (sorry, puppies!). They were gentle giants and provided perfect protection for the farm.
Of course, they didn’t mind going back to keep their shooting skills sharp. My husband enjoyed practicing whenever he got the chance and spent time shooting targets while exchanging stories with Mason. Yes, I participated too!
To my surprise, the first time I shot a Geissele URG-I, I was able to hit the target on the first try. I was pretty proud of myself. Kelvin has the PWS and Daniel Defense setups, but Mason’s favorite is the Geissele URG-I.
All in all, it was a very refreshing vacation. Sometimes it’s good to step outside of your comfort zone, slow down, and experience a completely different way of living. It’s still up for debate whether he’s prepared to trade the conveniences of the city for chores on a farm, but there’s no doubt that he left with a new appreciation for rural life.
Until next time, I’m dreaming of wide open fields, friendly goats, and peaceful sunsets on the farm. 🐓🐐
