I was emailing an old friend the other day, and he mentioned that he only reads nonfiction, but would like to read more fiction. So I asked him to tell me three things he generally likes.
“I like dramatic things that make me laugh more than things that are made to make me laugh,” he told me. “I’m not averse to sitting on the edge of my seat, and people who are doing the right thing or doing something selfless serve me a lot.”
After thinking about it, I recommended to him: james By Percival Everett — A 2024 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel that retells the adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the perspective of Jim, an enslaved man who escapes with Huck. Have you read it? I end up drinking it all at once. It can be funny, but it can also be serious, sad, and thrilling. There’s a lot of morality/immorality built into it. (Moreover, runner-up? american marriage. )
The book challenge was appealing, so I asked my friends and family to tell me three things so I could suggest the book to them too.
Mother: “Poetry is something I often listen to about people’s inner feelings.” heating and cooling. How about now? correspondent.
Dad: “Focus on your family. Sailing and everything there is to it. Explore new places.” marriage at sea.
Friend Brooke: “Gardening, bird watching, nature, and introspection. I took a career aptitude test in sixth grade and was told I should be a farmer.” Vaster Wilds.
Friend Rob: “Flawed protagonists, epic developments, and teenage years.” demon copperhead. educated. Shuggie Bain.
Friend Puri: “1990s sitcoms, romantic dramas, and gripping books.” sadness and bliss. Really good, actually. this american woman.
What do you think? So please tell me. What are your three favorite things? Let’s recommend books to each other!
PS What are your three favorite dark and funny books that you can’t stop thinking about?
