Of course, going to the beach is a dream. We especially love Rockaway Beach in Queens. But for a long time, it was also difficult. Does anyone else feel the same way? Toby will be restless, I will be hot and Anton…well, Anton will be happy about it, but we will both be so hot and restless!
But then I got a tip that changed everything…
Please bring a good shovel. It’s not a flimsy toy, it’s a durable item. A mother of five who was sitting next to me on the beach once gave me this advice. I looked up and saw it in action. Her children were happily playing and she was watching them and reading to them. It felt like the answer to a mystery. From then on, we brought good shovels every time, and the boys spent their time building castles (with moats!), digging little holes and watching the waves fill them up, and lots of other fun things. Other children wandered over and joined them, and I read while watching them.
Our other favorite beach toy is Uno. frisbeeand netbut nothing beats a good shovel!

Relax after digging hard.
What do you always bring? Do you have any other beach or travel pro tips?
PS A very low-key summer checklist and the number one key to enjoying your family vacation.
