When it comes to refreshing cocktails, few can rival a well-made mojito. Drinking a mint mojito always tastes like vacation and makes it feel like summer all year round.

The mojito’s roots date back to Havana, Cuba, in the late 16th century. This drink, originally known as “El Drake”, was created by Francis Drake and his ship’s crew. Ernest Hemingway was famously a fan and ordered them at his Havana bar, La Bodeguita del Medio.

Mojito is a classic cocktail that is easy to make at home. It’s simple, sweet, and only requires 5 ingredients. This is the best home mojito recipe and I think you will love it as much as I do.

Best mojito ingredients:

  • white rum – This is the classic and most traditional choice. Choose a light rum like Bacardi Silver Rum.
  • lime juice – Freshly squeezed by hand or using a press.
  • simple syrup – You can make your own or buy simple syrups. This mixes better into liquid drinks than mixing the leaves with granulated sugar, which is another option. Add more flavor with mint simple syrup
  • club soda – For toppings on drinks. You can use any carbonated water (unsweetened), including lime-flavored ones.
  • fresh mint leaves – Used both for mixing and garnishing.

How to make a mojito:

Prepare the glass by mixing (lightly crushing) the mint leaves at the bottom of the glass. This step releases fragrant mint oil. A few taps with a wooden stirrer (or the tip of a wooden spoon) is sufficient.

Add rum, lime juice, simple syrup, and mint leaves to a cocktail shaker.

Add ice, shake the cocktail, and strain into a tall glass, such as a Collins or highball glass filled with ice.

Top off your drink with club soda.

Garnish with mint sprigs.

Different types of rum:

  • White rum: White rum brings out the flavors of mint and lime. Enjoy a refreshing mojito with a clean and smooth base. This is also the most commonly and traditionally used one. So if you had a great mojito on vacation and are trying to recreate it, there’s a good chance white rum was used.
  • Aged rum: For a richer, more complex profile, consider using aged rum. Aromas of caramel, vanilla, and spice complement mint and lime for a sophisticated mojito experience. My favorites are Ron Zacapa and Appleton. When making a mojito, use white rum or aged rum.
  • Dark rum: If you prefer a stronger flavor, dark rum will add depth to your mojito. It has a unique sweetness similar to molasses. There are many dark rums out there, but the one I sometimes use is Gosling. Keep in mind that the darker the rum, the darker the drink, and the more caramel-colored or brown your mojito will be.

Type of mint:

Mint plays an important role in mojitos, providing a refreshing and aromatic profile. Spearmint is the traditional choice for making this cocktail, but there are other varieties worth considering to add unique flavor.

Here are some popular mint types to consider.

  • spearmint: Mint is the most commonly used mint in mojitos. It has a cool, sweet, slightly tangy flavor that pairs beautifully with other ingredients.
  • peppermint: Peppermint, with its more intense, minty flavor, adds a refreshing twist to mojitos. This is also fun if you’re making mojitos during the holiday (Christmas) season.
  • Mint of Thailand: This mint has a bright green color with purple stems and leaves that are slightly elongated and pointed. With an aroma reminiscent of anise and licorice, it has a bold flavor that is fun to add to a mojito.

Precautions

You can buy simple syrup or make your own. The easiest way is to combine equal parts water and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. Whisk until the sugar is completely dissolved, do not let the mixture boil. Cool and use as needed, or store in a container in the refrigerator and use for several months as needed.

Any rum can be used, but white rum is traditional.

You can use plain club soda or carbonated water instead of the lime flavor, but I like the lime flavor. You can also use sweetened sparkling water as a sweetener in this cocktail if you don’t have simple syrup.
