“Many of my acquaintances experienced unexpected life events in the early days of COVID-19, a reappraisal of sorts: a divorce, a new job, a baby, a dog I never planned on getting. For me. It was a move back to my hometown of Milton, Massachusetts, something I never thought I would take in a million years. I love this city, but sometimes it’s a short story about the soullessness of suburbia. I imagine my 14-year-old goth self would have been shocked to find out we lived here.

“We moved into our house in July 2021. We didn’t have much furniture and there were problems with the supply chain at the time, so we felt it would be impossible to find a new sofa that would arrive within a year. So I went to Room & Board and asked if they had a sofa available. I bought one, in yellow and velvet, and decided to build a room around it. Next came the naval wall.”

“While we were living in Brooklyn, we had our second child and our dining room became his bedroom. We didn’t want to give up the table, so we… Turned a table tent into a fire truck. With pillows, fairy lights, and books, it was the perfect hideaway. The dining table is now a dining table again. My daughter and her friends do a lot of crafts, so there’s glitter in every crevice. ”

“The centerpiece of my office is the desk my husband gave me 15 years ago, when I quit my day job and started writing full-time. On top of my desk, me and my childhood friend Noreen sat out in a snowstorm. It has a photo of me building a snowman. It’s a daily reminder of what inspires us to create.”

So I pulled out all the wallpaper samples I had, and she picked one out of the pile and held it up, and we both said, ‘This is perfect.’
