“Many of my acquaintances experienced unexpected life events in the early days of COVID-19, a reappraisal of sorts: a divorce, a new job, a baby, a dog I never planned on getting. For me. It was a move back to my hometown of Milton, Massachusetts, something I never thought I would take in a million years. I love this city, but sometimes it’s a short story about the soullessness of suburbia. I imagine my 14-year-old goth self would have been shocked to find out we lived here.

“We moved into our house in July 2021. We didn’t have much furniture and there were problems with the supply chain at the time, so we felt it would be impossible to find a new sofa that would arrive within a year. So I went to Room & Board and asked if they had a sofa available. I bought one, in yellow and velvet, and decided to build a room around it. Next came the naval wall.”

“A few months after purchasing this captain’s portrait, my best friend and I visited a huge art gallery in Maine. There were hundreds of paintings on the walls, and she I pointed to one and said, “I love this one!” it is Leo Dunn Portrait of Captain Cogswell! She never saw mine, but now we each have our own. ”

“While we were living in Brooklyn, we had our second child and our dining room became his bedroom. We didn’t want to give up the table, so we… Turned a table tent into a fire truck. With pillows, fairy lights, and books, it was the perfect hideaway. The dining table is now a dining table again. My daughter and her friends do a lot of crafts, so there’s glitter in every crevice. ”

“For my 40th birthday, my two best friends each gave me a gorgeous decorative bowl,” I remember thinking. Wow, we’ve reached the era of decorative bowls. Luckily, I love decorative bowls. ”

“The day after we moved in, a mysterious leak caused part of the ceiling on the second floor to cave in. The house still has its original wooden rain gutters. The walls are full of horsehair plaster. .This is the first home my husband and I own, so it’s a learning curve.

“Many of the women in my mother’s family go by their middle names. My first name is Julie, but no one has ever called me that. “After 20 years in a small apartment, we were happy to move into a big house. But the funny thing is, when all five of us are home, we’re almost always in the same room. We don’t have parties. When we do, we all gather in the small kitchen until I ask them to go elsewhere.”

“The centerpiece of my office is the desk my husband gave me 15 years ago, when I quit my day job and started writing full-time. On top of my desk, me and my childhood friend Noreen sat out in a snowstorm. It has a photo of me building a snowman. It’s a daily reminder of what inspires us to create.”

“When I was still drinking, I found myself drawn to things written by people who had stopped drinking. Anne Leary wrote a wonderful book called. The Good House What I always think about. “When my parents moved out of my childhood home, they called me to ask what they wanted to keep with me. I was living in a studio apartment in Brooklyn, so I gave away some of my childhood toys. The only thing left was my dollhouse. I’m so glad they did.”

“One night when I was having pizza with a friend, I asked her what I wanted to do with the back stairs. I had a million paint swatches with me. She suggested wallpaper instead. So I pulled out all the wallpaper samples I had, and she picked one out of the pile and held it up, and we both said, ‘This is perfect.’
