If you are interested in the process of creating an in-depth review of makeup or skincare, welcome! Today I will tell you the secrets of writing a review that will give you real power in choosing the perfect product.
What are product reviews?
Everyone reading this blog post has likely checked out online reviews of a product or service at least once in their life. A one-sentence feedback on Amazon, an angry comment under someone’s YouTube video, a 3000+ word article on IMDB – these are all classic examples of reviews.
- Quality product reviews: what to look out for?
- Quality product reviews: what to look out for?
To get the real story about a beauty product, pay attention to the little details. A well-written review will mention the reviewer’s skin type, skin concerns, recurring issues, age, and even lifestyle background. Take note of these and see if they match up with yours.
How to write a makeup/skincare product review on your blog
If there’s anything I’ve learned after 12 years of blogging every week, it’s that I really enjoy reviewing and photographing the makeup and skincare products I use. I love testing, discovering, reading, and most of all, seeing the results on my skin. But where do you start with an in-depth beauty review? What’s most important, and what can you leave out? Here are some steps I take to write effective beauty reviews on my blog:
- 1. First, take a photo of the product…
- 1. First, take a photo of the product…
I start by taking high-quality photos of my products in natural light. The reason for starting with this step is simple: it’s best to take photos when your product is still clean and unused. This way, your reader can clearly see the packaging, color, and texture.
I swatch my skin and hair products on my back or wrist, while my makeup products are best applied on the face and neck area. I also like to show swatches, smudging, and blended textures, so readers can get a better idea of how the product will look and work on their skin.
Before and after photos are crucial in the product review process, especially when these snaps show personal results over time. We love checking out high-quality before and after photos that show how a makeup product transforms skin, or how a skincare product revitalizes dry skin to give it an incredible glow. Of course, before and after snaps are best taken of the same area of skin, under the same kind of lighting.
- 2. Tell us a bit about your brand.
- 2. Tell us a bit about your brand.
The photos are ready, and so is the opening part of the review where I share my reasons for buying, talk a bit about my skin concerns, and share my expectations. Now I want to add a bit about the brand itself. The beauty market is very broad and has a ton of different products. From vintage and popular drugstore brands to indie and handmade products, they’re all worth featuring. Sharing the background of the brand also helps readers understand the philosophy behind the product.
Additionally, it would be great if you could explain a bit about your product. What did the ads promise? How long has it been on the market? Is there any controversial background to it?
- 3. Share your thoughts about the product’s packaging…
- 3. Share your thoughts about the product’s packaging…
Let’s talk beauty and convenience. We talk about the design, functionality, and sturdiness of the packaging. Is it travel-friendly? Does it feel premium or flimsy? Does the packaging come with extra tools or applicators? Every little detail matters to our readers who need help making a choice.
- 4. Describe the product’s texture, color, scent, etc.

- 5. Learn and share information about product ingredients…
- 5. Learn and share information about product ingredients…
Knowing what’s in a makeup or skincare product is my favorite part of a review. I go through the key ingredients, explain their effects on the skin, and even highlight potential allergens for those with sensitive skin. When possible, I link to academic sources and studies that back up the brand’s claims. Of course, it’s impossible to cover every ingredient and feature in a product, but the key ingredients that are effective should be described.
- 6. Take the time to communicate your ideas…

First impressions are great. Probably the most important one for everyone. But blogger reviews shouldn’t just focus on first impressions. After using a product for a specified period of time, you share your honest thoughts on how it performed. Did the product perform as advertised? How did it hold up on your skin and makeup throughout the day?
*Product comparison as review methodology:
Whenever possible, I love to compare several products in my reviews – old and new versions, colors, similar products etc. are very helpful for readers choosing a makeup or skincare product.
And finally, the long-awaited moment has come: I will give you a clear recommendation based on my overall experience. Would I buy it again? Is the price reasonable? Here, I am here to help readers make an informed decision without claiming to be right. I am only human, I make mistakes, and I may change my mind in the future.
Ideally, you’ll follow up with a product review after you’ve actually used a beauty product, sharing your updated opinion and before and after results.
Do people still rely on beauty product reviews?
While traditional marketing still holds a certain influence, the beauty industry is undoubtedly changing. Today’s consumers are savvier than ever before, and marketing strategies are far more aggressive. Still, honest beauty product reviews provide an important opportunity to see how products perform on real people with different skin tones, hair types, and concerns. This authenticity is hard to fake, making online reviews a reliable source of guidance for customers.
Admittedly, makeup and skincare reviews are never 100% unbiased and there’s always room for personal preference to creep in. But objectively, it’s incredibly helpful to read reviews from real people, hear their concerns, and see how a beauty product looks on real skin. When it comes to beauty products, I rely heavily on customer, blogger, and expert reviews.
