Does Kraft Mac & Cheese Go Bad or Expire? Get The Facts
SHARE

Yes, Kraft Mac & Cheese can go bad, and it depends on which form you mean. An unopened box is dry macaroni and a cheese sauce mix, and it keeps for months in a cool, dry cupboard. Mac and cheese you have already made is a perishable leftover that belongs in the fridge within 2 hours. Below: how long each lasts, what the date means, and when to throw it out.

Does Kraft Mac & Cheese go bad?

The Short Answer
Yes. An unopened box of Kraft Original Mac & Cheese has a recommended shelf life of about 8 months, according to a Kraft associate brand manager quoted by Food & Wine. Use the printed date as a quality guide, not an automatic safety cutoff. Cooked mac and cheese is different. Refrigerate it within 2 hours (1 hour above 90°F), keep the fridge at 40°F or below, and eat it within 3 to 4 days, per USDA. Discard food with mold, moisture damage or pests. These are brand-reported and agency figures, not guarantees.

For a complete pantry storage reference, see our Food Storage Guide. For plain pasta, see our guide on whether pasta goes bad.

📋 Does Kraft Mac & Cheese Go Bad: At a Glance

Unopened box, in the pantry About 8 months of recommended shelf life for the Original Blue Box, per a Kraft brand manager
Opened box or loose mix Keep it in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry place. We found no Kraft figure
Cooked, in the fridge 3 to 4 days per USDA, in shallow containers, with the fridge at 40°F or below
Cooked, left out Discard after 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F
Frozen leftovers USDA says 3 to 4 months, and longer storage can cost moisture and flavor
Reheating Heat leftovers to 165°F, measured with a food thermometer
Past the date, unopened USDA says dates are about quality. Check the box for damage and pests
Webbing, larvae or mold Discard it

Key Takeaways

  • Yes, Kraft Mac & Cheese can go bad, but the dry box and the cooked dish are different. A Kraft brand manager told Food & Wine in April 2025 that the Original Blue Box has a recommended shelf life of about 8 months. The quote doesn’t say it adds 8 months past the printed date, and USDA says dates are about quality.
  • Cooked mac and cheese is a perishable leftover. Per USDA, refrigerate it within 2 hours (1 hour above 90°F), keep the fridge at 40°F or below, and eat it within 3 to 4 days.
  • You can freeze leftovers. USDA says 3 to 4 months, and that frozen leftovers can lose moisture and flavor if stored longer.
  • Reheat leftovers to 165°F, measured with a food thermometer.
  • Discard a box with webbing, larvae or live insects, and any mac and cheese that is moldy, left out too long or past its 3 to 4 days. We don’t suggest tasting to check.
Which Kraft Mac & Cheese Do You Have?
Kraft Original Mac & Cheese Dinner is dry macaroni and a cheese sauce mix. Per Kraft Heinz’s Original Mac & Cheese Dinner page, you boil the macaroni, drain it, then add margarine or butter, milk and the sauce mix. Kraft Original Easy Mac is the microwave version. Per Kraft Heinz’s Easy Mac page, the cups hold macaroni and a cheese sauce mix, and you add water to the fill line, microwave and stir in the sauce mix. Other Kraft lines may be packaged differently, so follow their labels. Everything below also covers mac and cheese you have already made.

How Long Does Kraft Mac & Cheese Last?

Here is each figure by form. These are brand-reported and agency figures, not guarantees.

Where How Long Source
Unopened Original Blue Box, pantry About 8 months of recommended shelf life Kraft brand manager, as reported by Food & Wine (April 2025)
Plain dried pasta only, pantry 2 years. Does not cover the cheese sauce mix USDA
Cooked, refrigerator 3 to 4 days, at 40°F or below USDA and FDA
Cooked, left out 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F USDA and FDA
Cooked, frozen 3 to 4 months, and longer storage can cost moisture and flavor USDA
Reheating 165°F USDA

How Long Does an Unopened Box Last?

A Kraft associate brand manager told Food & Wine in April 2025 that the recommended shelf life for the Kraft Mac & Cheese Original Blue Box is about eight months. The quote doesn’t say it is an extra eight months beyond the printed date. We could not find the figure on Kraft’s own pages, so we cite it as reported.

For comparison, USDA’s shelf-stable food page lists plain dried pasta at 2 years in the pantry. That row does not establish the shelf life of Kraft’s complete mix, and USDA has no row for powdered cheese sauce mixes.

Use the date printed on your specific package as your quality guide. USDA says dating is for quality, not safety, and that shelf-stable products belong in a cool, dry place. For plain pasta, see our guide on whether pasta goes bad.

Can You Eat Kraft Mac & Cheese Past the Date?

USDA’s food product dating page says a “Best if Used By” date shows when a product will be of best flavor or quality. It says that, apart from infant formula, dates are not an indicator of a product’s safety. USDA adds that if the date passes during home storage, a product should still be safe and wholesome if handled properly.

Handling matters. USDA says that if foods are mishandled, before or after the date on the package, bacteria can quickly multiply.

We found no official source that says how many months past the date a Kraft box stays good. So check the box for damage and pests, and we’d use the oldest box first.

How Do You Store an Opened Box?

If you open the outer box, the loose macaroni is exposed to your pantry. If the sauce mix comes in its own sealed pouch, keep it sealed. University of Illinois Extension’s common pantry pests guide says pantry pests feed on a wide variety of foods, including flours and dry mixes. It recommends storing food in tightly closed glass, metal or heavy plastic containers.

We’d store loose macaroni and any opened sauce mix in tightly closed containers and write the date on them. We found no Kraft guidance on how long an opened box keeps.

Does the Cheese Powder Go Bad?

A grocer’s listing of the Original box shows a sauce mix that lists whey, milkfat and milk protein concentrate. Those are dairy ingredients, and the allergen line says the product contains wheat and milk. We found no official source that gives a shelf life for powdered cheese sauce mix on its own, so we won’t give a number.

Use the date on the box. We’d discard the box if the sauce pouch is torn or leaking, the food is moisture-damaged, or there are signs of pests. For other powdered dairy, see whether powdered milk goes bad, and for ready-made cheese sauce, see whether nacho cheese goes bad.

How Long Does Cooked Kraft Mac & Cheese Last in the Fridge?

Once you cook it, it is a perishable leftover. Kraft’s directions for the Original box add butter or margarine and milk to the macaroni and sauce mix. USDA’s leftovers guidance says leftovers can be kept in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.

USDA says to refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours of cooking, or within 1 hour if the temperature is over 90°F. It also says to divide large amounts of food into shallow containers. FDA’s “Are You Storing Food Safely?” page says to keep the refrigerator at or below 40°F.

FDA’s Refrigerator & Freezer Storage Chart has no entry for cooked pasta or mac and cheese. Its closest entry is macaroni salads at 3 to 5 days, which are cold salads. So we use USDA’s 3 to 4 days for hot mac and cheese. For leftovers in general, see our guide on how long leftovers last.

Can Mac and Cheese Sit Out?

No, not for long. FDA says not to let foods that require refrigeration sit at room temperature for more than two hours. It drops that to one hour if the air temperature is above 90°F.

USDA’s leftovers page gives the same limits. A pot on an unheated stove, a bowl of Easy Mac on a desk or a serving dish without temperature control all count. USDA’s potluck food safety recommendations says to keep hot foods at or above 140°F and cold foods at or below 40°F, which is different. We’d discard mac and cheese that sat out past those limits without hot or cold holding, and we don’t suggest tasting to check.

Can You Freeze Kraft Mac & Cheese?

Yes, you can freeze leftovers. USDA says leftovers can be frozen for 3 to 4 months. It says that although frozen leftovers are safe indefinitely, they can lose moisture and flavor when stored longer.

FDA’s chart says freezing at 0°F keeps food safe indefinitely, and that its freezer times are for quality only. That holds for food that was safe when frozen, because FDA also says freezing does not kill most bacteria. Those figures cover leftovers in general. Oregon State University Extension’s Foods That Do Not Freeze Well list says milk sauces may curdle or separate when frozen, and that cooked macaroni frozen alone can turn mushy. It does not list cheese sauces, and its list was reprinted in 2013. We found no source on how Kraft mac and cheese holds up, so we’d expect some change in texture. For foods that don’t freeze well, see foods you should never freeze.

How Do You Reheat Kraft Mac & Cheese?

USDA says to reheat leftovers until they reach 165°F, as measured with a food thermometer. That applies to mac and cheese from the stove or the microwave.

Reheat refrigerated mac and cheese within its 3 to 4 days, or reheat leftovers that were frozen safely before that window ended. Heat to 165°F throughout.

Does Kraft Easy Mac Go Bad?

Unprepared, Easy Mac follows the same logic as the box. Kraft Heinz says the cups include macaroni and a cheese sauce mix, so use the printed date, a cool, dry spot and a check for damage. We found no Kraft shelf-life figure for it.

The directions have you add water to the fill line, microwave, and stir in the sauce mix. Once it is made, it is a prepared dish. Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours and use them within 3 to 4 days, per USDA.

How Can You Tell if Kraft Mac & Cheese Has Gone Bad?

Start with the box. Illinois Extension says Indian meal moth caterpillars leave a silken thread, often forming webs across the surface of the food they infest. It says heavily infested items should be thrown away outdoors in a tightly sealed bag. We’d treat webbing, larvae or live insects as a reason to discard the box.

For mac and cheese you have made, count the days and hours rather than judging by looks. FDA says food can make you very sick even when it doesn’t look, smell or taste spoiled. FDA also says mold is a sign of spoilage and that the safest practice is to discard moldy food.

We don’t suggest tasting to test.

Can Old Boxed Mac and Cheese Make You Sick?

USDA says that if foods are mishandled, before or after the date on the package, bacteria can quickly multiply. For a dry box, the date alone is not the issue. For cooked mac and cheese, time and temperature are.

We found no source tying a particular symptom to Kraft mac and cheese, so we won’t list any. Discard cooked mac and cheese that is past its window or sat out too long.

Signs Something Is Wrong

  • Webbing, larvae or live insects in the box. Illinois Extension describes webbing as a sign of Indian meal moths and says to throw out heavily infested items.
  • Mold on the macaroni, the sauce mix or mac and cheese you have made. FDA identifies mold as a spoilage sign and says to discard moldy food.
  • Mac and cheese left out more than 2 hours without hot or cold holding, or 1 hour above 90°F. USDA and FDA say to refrigerate within those limits.
  • Cooked mac and cheese older than 3 to 4 days. That is past USDA’s window for leftovers.
  • Our added caution: a torn or leaking sauce pouch, or a wet, clumped sauce mix.

The first four items follow USDA, FDA and Illinois Extension. The last is our own caution, not an agency list. Looks and smell don’t prove food is safe, so count the time. We don’t suggest tasting to test.

Normal Things That Aren’t a Problem

  • A box past its printed date. That doesn’t automatically mean an unopened box is unsafe, since USDA says dates are about quality, but storage history, package condition and signs of pests or moisture still matter.
  • Frozen leftovers that have lost some moisture or flavor. USDA says that can happen with longer storage, and that safely handled leftovers kept frozen are safe indefinitely.
  • Mac and cheese you refrigerated within 2 hours, kept at 40°F or below, and are eating on day 2 or 3. That is inside USDA’s 3 to 4 days.

Quick Storage Reference

  • Unopened box: Cool, dry cupboard. About 8 months of recommended shelf life for the Original Blue Box, per a Kraft brand manager. Follow your package’s printed date.
  • Cooked, in the fridge: Refrigerate within 2 hours, in shallow containers, with the fridge at 40°F or below. 3 to 4 days per USDA.
  • Left out: Discard after 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F.
  • Frozen: 3 to 4 months per USDA, with some loss of moisture and flavor after that.
  • Reheating: Heat to 165°F, measured with a food thermometer.
Situation What to Do
Unopened box, two months past the printed date Check the box for damage and pest signs. USDA says dates are about quality, so an intact, dry box is a quality question, not a safety cutoff.
Box with webbing or larvae inside Discard it, in a tightly sealed bag.
Cooked mac and cheese, 2 days in the fridge Within USDA’s 3 to 4 days if it was promptly refrigerated and kept at 40°F or below. Reheat it to 165°F.
Cooked mac and cheese, 6 days in the fridge Discard it. That is past USDA’s 3 to 4 days.
Mac and cheese left on the stove overnight Discard it. USDA’s limit is 2 hours.
Mac and cheese at room temperature at a party for 3 hours, without hot or cold holding Discard it. USDA and FDA give 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F.
Leftovers frozen for 5 months Safe if they were handled safely before freezing and stayed frozen at 0°F. USDA says longer storage can cost moisture and flavor, so the dish may lose moisture, flavor or texture.
Easy Mac made, refrigerated within 2 hours, eaten on day 2 Within USDA’s 3 to 4 days if kept at 40°F or below. Reheat it to 165°F.
Cooked mac and cheese that looks and smells fine on day 6 Discard it. Looks and smell don’t make it safe.

How We Checked This
In October 2026 we read USDA’s Leftovers and Food Safety page, which shows no date, and USDA’s shelf-stable food and food product dating pages. We read FDA’s Are You Storing Food Safely page and FDA’s Refrigerator and Freezer Storage Chart, dated March 2018. We read USDA’s potluck food safety page, which shows no date. We read University of Illinois Extension’s common pantry pests guide, which shows no date, and Oregon State University Extension’s Foods That Do Not Freeze Well list, reprinted March 2013. We read Kraft Heinz’s product pages for the Original box and Easy Mac for the directions. We read a grocery retailer’s listing for the Original box’s ingredient text, because Kraft Heinz’s page did not display it. The eight-month Kraft figure comes from a Food & Wine article from April 2025, which we read as a syndicated copy. We found no shelf-life statement on Kraft’s own pages. USDA’s dried pasta row doesn’t cover the cheese sauce mix, and FDA’s chart has no entry for cooked pasta. We did not test any product, and we could not open USDA’s FoodKeeper data directly. Our own suggestions say we’d or we suggest. This article is general information, not medical advice.

Does Kraft Mac & Cheese Go Bad FAQ

Does Kraft Mac & Cheese go bad?

Yes, but the box and the cooked dish are different. An unopened box keeps for months in a cool, dry cupboard: about 8 months for the Original Blue Box per a Kraft brand manager. Cooked mac and cheese lasts 3 to 4 days in the fridge at 40°F or below, per USDA.

How long does an unopened box of Kraft Mac & Cheese last?

About 8 months of recommended shelf life for the Original Blue Box, per a Kraft associate brand manager quoted by Food & Wine in April 2025. The quote doesn’t say it adds 8 months past the printed date, so use the date on your package as your quality guide. USDA’s 2 years for dried pasta covers plain pasta, not the full mix.

Can you eat Kraft Mac & Cheese past the best-by date?

It may still be usable. USDA says that, apart from infant formula, dates are not an indicator of safety, and that a product handled properly should still be safe if the date passes at home. Storage and package condition matter, so discard it if you find moisture damage, mold or pests. We found no official source on how many months past the date is okay.

Is Kraft Mac & Cheese still good a year or two past the date?

The sources we read don’t establish that Kraft Mac & Cheese is acceptable one or two years past its printed date. USDA says dates are about quality, not an automatic safety cutoff, but that is not a verified extension period. USDA’s 2 years covers plain dried pasta, not the cheese sauce mix. Check the box for pests, moisture and mold, and discard it if you see any.

Does the cheese powder in Kraft Mac & Cheese go bad?

We found no official shelf life for powdered cheese sauce mix on its own. The mix lists dairy ingredients, so follow the date on the box and discard it if the pouch is torn or wet. See whether powdered milk goes bad for another powdered dairy product.

How long does cooked Kraft Mac & Cheese last in the fridge?

USDA says leftovers can be kept in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. Refrigerate within 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F, use shallow containers, and keep the fridge at 40°F or below. See how long leftovers last for other leftovers.

Can mac and cheese sit out overnight?

No. FDA and USDA say foods that require refrigeration shouldn’t sit out more than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F. We’d discard mac and cheese left out overnight.

Can you freeze Kraft Mac & Cheese?

Yes. USDA says leftovers can be frozen for 3 to 4 months, and that frozen leftovers can lose moisture and flavor if stored longer. Oregon State Extension says milk sauces may curdle or separate when frozen, so expect some change in texture. See foods you should never freeze.

How do you reheat Kraft Mac & Cheese?

Heat leftovers to 165°F, measured with a food thermometer, per USDA. Reheat refrigerated mac and cheese within its 3 to 4 days, or leftovers that were frozen safely before then.

How can you tell if Kraft Mac & Cheese is bad?

For the box, look for webbing, larvae or live insects, and for a torn or leaking sauce pouch or a wet mix. For cooked mac and cheese, look for mold and count the days and hours. FDA says food can make you sick even when it looks and smells fine. We don’t suggest tasting to test.

Does Kraft Mac & Cheese need to be refrigerated?

Not the unopened box. Keep it in a cool, dry cupboard. Once you cook it, refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours. See whether pasta needs to be refrigerated for plain pasta.

Does Kraft Easy Mac go bad?

Dry, it follows the same rules as the box: use the date and check for damage. Once made, leftovers last 3 to 4 days in the fridge, per USDA.

Can old boxed mac and cheese make you sick?

USDA says mishandled food can grow bacteria before or after the date. We found no source on specific symptoms from Kraft mac and cheese, so we won’t list any. Discard a box with pests, and cooked mac and cheese past its window.

Do Kraft’s other mac and cheese lines follow the same rules?

Follow the label on the package, because formats differ. The cooked-dish rules apply to any prepared mac and cheese: refrigerate within 2 hours and eat it within 3 to 4 days, per USDA. We found no official source for the shelf life of each Kraft line.
