The gimlet is one of the most iconic classic cocktail recipes. A traditional gimlet is made with three ingredients: gin, simple syrup, and lime juice. A slightly sweet and very refreshing cocktail.
Gin gimlets are one of my go-to drinks when I want something simple and fresh. Gimlets are a fascinating blend of flavor and story. Gimlet is gin, the rum equivalent of a daiquiri. That’s because both are made using a simple mixture of distilled spirits, lime juice, and sugar.
In this article, we’ll discuss the history of the gimlet cocktail, its ingredients, variations, and how to create the perfect cocktail.

History of the gimlet cocktail
Like many classic drinks, the origin of the gimlet is not 100% clear. Rumor has it that the Royal Navy created the drink in the 18th century as a medicinal tonic to prevent scurvy.
The vitamin C in citrus fruits is said to protect against illness, and the gin must have been a bonus or a way to get everyone to drink it.
The name “gimlet” itself is thought to have been inspired by the gimlet tool, a small hand-held drilling device used to punch holes in wooden barrels used to store food and spirits.

Ging gimlet ingredients
- gin – Gimlets are traditionally made with gin. You can also use other spirits, such as vodka, if desired.
- lime juice – Lime is the main flavor of gimlets. I always use freshly squeezed lime juice.
- simple syrup – You can use store-bought or make your own simple syrup. It’s easy to make and guarantees a smooth drink without the unpleasant texture of sugar crystals.
Best gin for gimletss
When it comes to gin, be sure to use a high quality one here. As with most simple cocktails with only a few ingredients, the quality of the spirits you use will play a big role. My favorite gin that is always available in stores is Hendrix’s. High quality and reliable.
However, you can also use your favorite quality (top shelf) gin to make a great gimlet.

How to make a gimlet
In a cocktail shaker, combine all three ingredients with ice. Shake well and strain into a chilled coupe or martini glass.
Gimlets are sometimes served over ice. In fact, my favorite local restaurant always asks me which one I prefer when ordering a gimlet.
Add sprigs of rosemary or mint leaves as garnishes and a little flavor if you have them. Otherwise, lime wedges are also a great garnish.
gimlet variations
- One variation popular in many old recipe books is to use lime cordial in place of fresh lime juice and simple syrup. If you want to try this variation, use 2 ounces of gin and 1 ounce of gin. rose lime juice cordial. Add ice, shake, pour into a chilled glass and enjoy.
- vodka gimlet: To make a vodka gimlet, simply follow the recipe and replace the gin with vodka.
- Basil gimlet: Muddle Add a few fresh basil leaves to the mixing glass before adding the gin and lime cordial to infuse the cocktail with herbal flavor.
- Cucumber gimlet: Add a few cucumber slices to the shaker and mix gently to release the refreshing essence. Pour the cocktail into a glass filled with ice and garnish with a cucumber wheel.
- Rosemary Gimlet: Add some fresh rosemary to the simple syrup during preparation. Add more pieces to the cocktail shaker as you shake the gin, lime juice, and simple syrup mixture. Garnish with fresh rosemary (you guessed it!).
What glassware do you use for gimlets?
i love this drink classic coupe glasss. You can use any type of martini glass you have. my other favorites are these decorative cocktail glasses.
Pro tip is to put the glasses in the freezer to chill at least 30 minutes before using. The result is a cold glass like the one you get at a high-end restaurant.
Learning how to make simple and timeless cocktails like gin gimlets can take your home cooking to the next level.
