Are you tired of rough, dry skin on your elbows and heels that just doesn’t seem to do anything? You’re not alone. These stubborn areas can be frustrating and sometimes even painful, and dry, cold weather can make the skin feel lethargic, cracked, and even worse. But don’t worry, with these 3 easy steps, you can get rid of that skin on your elbows and feet (or anywhere) overnight.
5 Common Causes of Dry and Irritated Skin
Dry, rough skin can be very uncomfortable and sometimes painful. While it is often a temporary issue, it can become chronic if left untreated, especially in people with underlying skin conditions. Before beginning treatment, it is important to understand the common causes behind this skin problem.
- Environmental factors: Cold, dry weather, low humidity, and excessive exposure to sunlight and wind can strip the skin of moisture, leading to dryness.
- aging: As we age, our skin’s natural ability to retain moisture decreases, making it more susceptible to dryness and roughness.
- Harsh products: Harsh soaps, detergents and cleansers can irritate the skin, strip it of its natural oils and lead to dryness.
- Health status: Some skin conditions, such as psoriasis, eczema, and dermatitis, can cause dry skin as a symptom.
- Lifestyle Habits: Frequent bathing, especially in hot water, can strip the skin of its natural oils, and excessive scratching or scrubbing can further irritate dry skin.
Why is simply moisturizing dry skin not always effective?
How to cure dry elbows and feet in 3 easy steps
- Step 1. Exfoliation: Acid Peel
- Step 1. Exfoliation: Acid Peel
Gone are the days of harsh, mechanical peels. Now, chemical peels are taking the beauty industry by storm. The reason is that they are not stingy, sharp, or damaging to the skin, and of course, they come in many different forms. On days when my skin is dry and I need extra smoothness on my elbows and legs, I always go for a chemical peel. I wash the area in the morning before applying an acid peeling toner, then apply a generous amount of glycolic or lactic acid to the dry skin and leave it on for the day.
- Step 2. Deep conditioning: Urea lotion + natural oils
- Step 2. Deep conditioning: Urea lotion + natural oils
Let’s move on to the next step! After a strong exfoliation to remove all those pesky dry skin flakes, you are ready to moisturize your elbows, knees, and heels. The best way to moisturize is to apply a generous amount of moisturizing lotion or cream to your skin instead of just a regular moisturizing lotion or cream. You need to find a moisturizer for dry skin that has specific ingredients that address the problem.
Sometimes I top my lotion with a natural oil. I like nutty oils like coconut, shea butter, or Elizavecca’s jojoba oil. They have the perfect balance of thickness, oiliness, and absorption. This little step is completely optional, so if you’re not a fan of natural oils, feel free to skip it.
- Step 3. Wrap it overnight in plastic wrap and put on some cute socks.
- Step 3. Wrap it overnight in plastic wrap and put on some cute socks.
And for the final step, wrap the dish in good ol’ fashioned plastic wrap. This is my favorite spa trick and it works like a charm. Wrap your knees, hands, fingertips, elbows, feet. It works anywhere. Wear a long sleeve shirt, mittens, and socks on your feet. Your socks have to be cute or this hack won’t work. Your socks have to be cute or it won’t work. Sorry.
Daily Moisturizing: To keep my skin in great condition, I apply a light moisturizer to my elbows and feet daily, which helps maintain the moisture levels achieved during the deep conditioning treatment and prevents dryness.
lastly…
Well, that’s the secret. It couldn’t be easier! By following these three steps, you can effectively soften the dry, rough skin on your elbows and feet, essentially overnight. Of course, if your skin is extremely dry, you may need to add a few more home spa sessions like this, but if not, it will work overnight. With a little attention, you’ll soon be seeing long-lasting moisturized skin on any part of your body.
