“Did you ever think you could find a forest to walk in?” my 12-year-old son, an outdoorsman, sometimes asks me. As a kid growing up in New York City, Anton appreciates skate parks and bagel shops, but he also craves nature. bone.

So I offered to take her to Maine for the weekend after school. It’s a place with not just forests, but lakes, rocks, and periwinkles that come out of their shells when you hum. We were both really excited.

The first night we were lucky enough to get a room. Aragostaa beautiful little hotel on Deer Isle recommended by Alison.

Owner-chef Devin Finnigan’s famous dishes include: her seasonal tasting menuHowever, we focused on the breakfast that came with the room, including these main blueberry pancakes. I don’t usually do it like pancakes, and these blew my mind.

we also played a lot of chess small travel board.

After breakfast, we set out for a hike up Blue Hill Mountain.

This is the top!

In the afternoon we explored the charming fishing village of Stonington.

…and then joined my friends julie (of Rudy Jude fame) and her family, burnt cove boil.

Basically, crab is popped in front of you, followed by corn on the cob, then lobster, and then a classic ice cream sandwich. Julie and her husband Anthony showed us how to get all the meat out. (Their children were already professionals.)

The four boys then ran around on the rocks while the adults chatted. Isn’t it always so fun to interact with the people who live in the places you visit?Julie and Anthony said that when they brought their newly hatched chicks home to keep them warm, the peeps were really loud. Then the crickets came into the house and made so much noise that no one could find them and everyone was making a fuss (lol). Very different from city life!

The next day Anton and I stayed at a nice hotel. Asticou Hotel Near Acadia National Park.

We drove to several trailheads and they were all crowded. We had to wait in a long line just to start the hike. Luckily we found a quieter area and took a long walk around Jordan Pond, playing Would You Both and Category along the way. Do you have a favorite travel game?

Finally, we scooped up some stones one last afternoon before heading back to Brooklyn.

great travel companion
Ah, Maine, what a magical place! Of course it’s not in the photo. Everything is predictable: traffic jams, moody teenage moments, locked rental car keys.
Have you been to Maine? Do you live there? Which part do you like? Do you have any pro tips? I would love to hear it. Shit
P.S: Another great hotel on our Maine trip. When the boys were younger, a house in Maine with a bedroom overlooking the water.
