A Very Low-Key Winter Checklist

We’ve created a modest checklist for summer and fall, but what’s yours? winter Hopes and Dreams? As someone who struggles easily with depression and anxiety, I like to plan fun things to do to keep my spirits up even on the darkest days. I’d love to hear what works for you. Here are 12 great things I’m looking forward to…

1. Grab a blanket and watch the tried-and-true comfort show. If you can’t think of one, watch the two seasons of PEN15. I can understand the feelings of a geeky junior high school girl living in the suburbs. (Don’t ask me how I know.)

2. Read poetry at bedtime. My three favorites are Ada Limón, Kate Bear, mary oliver. Furthermore, this poems for married people Written by John Kenny, this made me laugh:

winter.
It was pitch dark for about 5 hours,
However, the children are still awake,
And I’m just a little drunk.
What you shout is what I call an assertion.

4. Dive into cheese pasta. Roasted chicken is certainly delicious. Yes, everyone loves soup. But in my opinion, winter means pasta. Some recipes to get things started: cacio e pepe, Penne with ricotta and lemonand Oven-roasted squash and spinach.

5. Increase mood lighting. I always think of the twilight room in Mad Men. To get a similar glow, I learned from an interior designer friend to try three light sources in each room, ideally using a dimmer switch below eye level. And if all else fails, just connect fairy lights.

6. Watch a play (or concert or ballet). My friend is losing his mind over that game. release — Freddie cried! — and I take my mother on vacation. But of course it doesn’t have to be Broadway. It’s really fun to see the local Nutcracker, High School Musical, and live performances. Speaking of which, the hilarious Alex Edelman will be performing a solo show soon. cleveland, philadelphiaand new yorkIf you want to get tickets.

7. Make night walks more interesting. My kids love competition – who can jump the highest? Who can dunk with a Nerf basketball? — And yesterday, on a walk, Anton asked me to predict how many pumpkins we would pass on the way home. “15?” I took the plunge and tried it. “I’ll take over,” he said, and we both cheered as he totaled a whopping 21 points. Now I’m excited about more walking bets. How many dogs will you walk with? How many Christmas trees can you see in your front window? How many pedestrians are wearing baseball caps? The possibilities are endless.

10. Go to a museum and look at a work of art. “When you go to the library,” says the psychology professor. James O. Pawelski“I don’t walk through the shelves looking at the spines of books and tweet to my friends on the way home, “I read 100 books today!” But essentially it’s the number of people experiencing the museum. ”

11. Visit the Christmas store. No matter what you’re celebrating, the store is filled with colorful decorations and flickering lights that will cheer you up. My favorite thing about New York is John Derian’s Holiday Shop Located in the East Village. Those pickles! (He also target collection. )

12. Eat muffins for breakfast. “Muffins are small cakes that are socially acceptable to eat in public at dawn,” Beth Kalb writes in the Newsletter issue. This week’s mental health advice. After all, “you need something more appealing than a bowl of cereal” to get you out of bed on a dark, cold winter morning, adds Lottie + Doof’s Tim. “These apple cider muffins It will work. ”
